This is probably simple to do but after mucking around a bit I could not work it out.

I am a TCL/VF customer so I have had a separate router (TPLink WR1043ND) with the cable modem. And it's flashed with Gargoyle.

I would like to continue to use that router and only use the Technicolor as a modem. But the life of me I cannot work out how to configure the TPLink as a router which points to the Technicolor.

I also at the moment am keeping the TCL connection but will back it down from 150GB to 10-20GB.

I reset all the Technicolor settings and set its gateway to 192,168.2.254. The TPLink was always at 192.168.2.250.

In the main TP Link setting for the cable connection you set static IP, the IP address that TCL gives you and the gateway. But I tried setting the IP address to 192.168.2.254 and the gateway to the same and that didn't work. It's probably something easy to fix but it wasn't obvious to me.

As an aside the Technicolor seems to have a default DHCP scope of
LAN_private 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.253 192.168.1.254

This plays hell with my network since the default gateway is 192.168.2.254 so addresses assigned in the 192.168.1.x range via DHCP don't connect to the Internet. I have assigned a new DHCP range but it cannot be overwritten by the LAN_private range. So for wireless devices to connect (my wired devices I have fixed IP) I have had to manually code in IP and DNS addresses which is really untidy.

Simple answer is you can't.

Well you can - but double NAT will occur which should be avoided unless it's absolutely unavoidable.

Yoy need to go and buy a Draytek Vigor 120 which will act solely as a modem and does PPPoA to PPPoE translation which you plug your router into.

Yea I wouldnt bother. Draytek vigor 120 solves all your problems.

If you want to set it up with double nat then it would go something like...

TG582N-------------------Gargoyle
192.168.2.254 WAN:192.168.2.10(for example) (WAN DNS can be 192.168.2.254)
NAT enabled NAT enabled
DHCP Disabled LAN: 192.168.1.1/24
DHCP enabled: .100-.254 (for example)

That all clients will be in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. Then you can static route between the 2 subnets if you still want to access the TG582N for stats or configuration from the LAN side of gargoyle. Would suggest enabling UPnP on the TG582N but probably won't help much.

Vigor 120 with PPPoA-PPPoE bridging is what you want for a much better set up.

That's disappointing. Anyway my main motivation was to be able to set custom DNS servers and alter the DHCP range. I use Unblock-US and a Roku box which has no ability to customize the DNS settings so it has to get them from the router.

This didn't seem possible from the GUI bit I found I could make those router changes by telneting into the router.

So all I lose is the cool traffic reporting on Gargoyle.

Thanks. Don't want to buy another device when I just got the TPLink and I'm not sure how long I will continue with xDSL. Not overwhelming me with speed at the moment. But the 500GB is tempting.

You can grab a cheap DSL modem that can do PPPoA half bridge like the Dynalink RTA1320 or TP Link TD-8840 (non T) off trademe. for <$30 usually.
