Telecom is offering 500GB of mobile data to 3 winners every month for 24 months as part of their S4 launch from today if you buy online with everyone else getting an extra 1GB a month.

Only catch is for the 500GB is that their fair use policy applies which is mentioned right at the end of the T&C's. Does that seem fair they offer you 500GB but essentially you're not allowed to use at large portion of it even though you're entitled to it?

500GB is a pretty unusual amount considering their highest data plans are only 3GB. Sure you could use it for tethering.. but otherwise who could possibly use 500GB of data or anywhere near that on their phone every month?

The battery drain would be pretty bad for that much data...I don't even use 500GB on my ADSL!

you could certianly torrent a lot of stuff if you get decent dual carrier speeds at home. Set your phone up as a wifi hotspot, plug it in to keep it powered, and away you go.

The fair usage clause is probably standard so that if you do something that causes the network to fall over they can switch you off.

And if you decide to have your handset permanently plugged to mains it may get so hot that could start a fire...

What does telecom mean by "national data use only"? Using the 3G/4G service locally vs overseas I guess?

I guess 500gb sounds bigger and more appealing than simply saying 'unmetered' as the two are effectively the same on a mobile network.

I just find it very misleading. Its like winning $17M lotto and being told you can only spend x amount of it. The money is still yours but you can't touch it.

Of course I know in reality no one would ever come close to using it all (We even struggle to get over 100GB on our adsl.) but its the ethics behind it. If they advertise to give you that much data you should be entitled to use it how ever you want and be allowed to use it all.

What makes you think someone can't use it? I know lots of people who get through at least that much data on their adsl fixed line every month, and in many cases telecoms dual carrier speeds will be faster than dsl, so it is entirely possible to get through that much data on mobile if you want to.

I guess you must really really hate all those broadband plans that are unlimited since it is not possible to use an unlimited amount of data. The amount used will always be limited by the line speed and other constraining factors.

And as for comments about battery drain, does it say the data must be used in a handset? My adsl modem also has 3G backup so I could stick the sim in a dongle, plug it into my modem and use it for my home broadband for the duration.

But this all comes back to their fair use policy. Yes if you really wanted you could use that much data but you'd be in breach of their fair use policy. To use so much data you would have to be downloading large files and constantly streaming video which they say is not recommended. As stated in the T&C's "Mobile Broadband is not intended or designed for prolonged intensive data downloads or uploads (including file sharing and long duration streaming videos)."

I think after 50GB they'd be starting to ask questions about your "fair use"

Now the interesting thing will be is if LTE is "another account type" because if it is then you can't change to it without losing your prize
