Trying to get an issue sorted for my mum and her partner but telecom hasn't been able to help them yet

He called and had the address transferred, they told him it was free.. until the email arrives stating otherwise and that it was a primary account.
Then he called again to ask about the charges and they transferred him to nothing, just rang for 30min+ (he is patient!)

So, they want to merge two xtra accounts together so one email address becomes a sub account on the other (to avoid the $10 a month charge)

From what I understand, this isn't easy to do on telecoms side and requires a bit of manual work..
Does anyone know, if I request they delete the email address, how long it takes before it becomes available to manually add as a sub account so I can do this myself?

Thanks!

I have run into a similar problem and was told basically no.
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=112221

They lost a customer over it.

Edit: Sorry if you read through the thread I linked to above, a telecom staff member has replied and said they can do it in the background via a complicated process.

I understand some of the telecom staff that were present on these forums have left telecom so I am not sure if they can still help, or if the CSR's should now know the process.

Yeah its a bit disappointing that they are unable to do this or allow you to do it yourself

trying to get them converted over to gmail but its a slow process when they are stuck in their ways

The biggest issue i find with switching people to gmail is they cant leave outlook express.
The solution is to

1) Create the gmail account and enable POP3 access within the gmail settings
2) Setup the pop3 account inside outlook express
3) Set the reply address on their xtra account within outlook express to the new gmail account.

Some modern email programs will then update the contacts book with the new reply address when it sees a message from you with a new reply address.

Wonder how long pop and imap will be free on gmail for, especially as google are shutting down quite a lot of services  and now charging for lots of things. It would make sense for them to drop POP and IMAP on free accounts, so people are forced to use webmail, and view adverts, as google are primarily an advertising company.

Thats an interesting thought.

I think it will be quite a while. Windows live mail currently uses imap when using the autoconfig process to add a gmail account.

Send me an email pl at telecom.co.nz and I will see what can be done.  It's a bit involved with primary and sub accounts.  But I believe it can be done.
