HI,

I found this xtra tool in my spam email, so I guess many already have it.

Does it really improve my broadband connection

Should I install it ...

Here's an explanation of this thing. It doesn't improve broadband connections. It makes it easier to find problems or restore configurations.

Less calls for the Xtra Help Desk, that's what they want probably?

From their FAQ:

Will the Xtra Help Assistant assist with the speed of my connection?

No, unfortunately it doesn't. You can find more information on speed at xtra.co.nz/speed or to test the speed of your Internet connection click here.

It's a glamorised "help" file with some animated Chick (female character), It can check system properties, networking and 3 D-Link "pack in" DSL modems.

It can then either try and correct it or spit out an error code for users to call 0800 Call-Xtra and get something sorted out.

I think it's a good idea for a new user as they seem to associate well with speaking, talking, humanoid robot things (remember BonziBuddy) and that talking gorilla), us tech-heads can steer well clear of this, unnessasary system glut.

I would download it & tear it apart to ensure it's not system damaging but it's and "install on demand" and probably against the terms and conditions to "dissasemble her"

(I tore that bonzibuddy apart and wrote an .ACS script up for the parrot and that purple gorilla to cuss and swear and do real nasty stuff,, it was actually really funny back in the day)

Has anybody actually ripped apart the Xtra help assistant yet?
