Interesting that the gigabit port on the Technicolour TG587V3 gateway seems to scrub off maybe 7 meg compared with the other 100 ports. They give around 27 - it gives 20. Needless to say I don't use it now. Tried this both with a switch and my laptop directly connected.

Presume its some kind of network overhead but odd its slower!!
