Hi,

This topic is carrying on from http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=115480&page_no=2  as it started to stray from the original topic post, and i thought it need its own thread.

To summarise:

Telecom is now supplying a Pace V5542 modem which can be used for any of their  ADSL/VDSL or UFB connections (similar to a fritzbox)

When the Pace is used as a DHCP server it sets a search domain of gateway.pace.net (thanks LennonNZ). Windows machines will set this as the connection specific DNS suffix.

So when you ping or otherwise try to resolve an internal computer name (eg comp123) the name it actually looks for is comp123.gateway.pace.net

Now pace.net actually has a wildcard DNS entry so will accept any query for *.pace.net and return the IP 64.99.80.30, so the IP address that is returned is an external internet address not the internal one, breaking some network functionality

If you don't use the Pace as the DHCP or the DNS server then the problem will not appear, but for a lot of small business and home users the Pace will do both roles

I have now played with the modem again, and have not been able to find a workaround or setting to stop this DNS suffix being sent out. There is the ability to telnet to the device, but it seems to have a different username and password from the HTML admin so cannot use that to access any more advanced settings

I have queried Telecom about this and will update the thread with any replies, however it looks like they will need to adjust the firmware to resolve the issue.

Has anyone managed to get telnet access to these units? or found an easily accessible workaround that involves the modem and not using a third party DHCP or DNS server?

Clint

Below is the reply from Telecom Complex support, kudos on the very quick reply - under 6 hours Laughing(names have been omitted to protect the innocent, spelling errors are theirs)

Good Afternoon Clint,

Thank you for your email in regards to the Pace V5542 Modem firmware.

I can confirm the issue you are experiencing is similar on other brands of modems.

Unless you have the service called Bonjur for Mac's or ZeroConf for Windows/Linux, you may not be able to connect to the network shares. It is common practise to use the IP address to connect to the network shares.

I have also checked our test Pace V5542 Modem firmware here at our office and I am unable to find away to change the modems domain from there.

I will also pass this valueable feedback to our Product team about the V5542 modem as well.

I disagree with the statement that it is common practice to use the IP address to connect to network shares, especially in small business where things may change without proper documentation or change management, and have replied to them on this.

I'm incredulous that Telecom would make such a statement to justify a clear fault.

Absolute rubbish.

The pace v5542 is essentially a piece of junk for failing to implement the most basic of network features.

Friends don't let friends use ISP provided modems/routers.

TomatoUSB mod, Gargoyle Router, pfsense, mikrotik RouterOS.... ftw
