I can't figure out why my laptop suddenly loses wifi contact and connects whenever it picks the signal up again. Whereas my desktop, also wireless, stays connected to the same router all the time. The two are about six feet from each other.

Did call the xtra help desk who said it may be a problem with my laptop and to check for spyware or a virus. Have done all checks and it seems clean.(AdAware, Windows Defender, and Avast!) Whereas, my laptop stays connected when I use it at hotspots...and therefore don't think it is a laptop problem.

The desktop uses a D-Link wireless G USB adapter...and the laptop is a ThinkPad R51

Any suggestions?

I wouldn't blame a spyware or virus. Try looking for updated drivers for your laptop. Also some have controls to manage the transmission power - look for this in the Device Manager.
