yes! You have to take it to your nearest Post Office along with your rental telephone. Laughing

but . . . . seriously though - the modem is yours. You should be able to use it with your next isp.

Either way its yours the keep, you don't need to return it. If you are still in your contract term you may have to pay termination fees though.

I don't think you can easily use it with your next ISP, as it is setup for telecoms network. At least that is what I have heard about some of the newer models, and it is done in the modems firmware. Possibily it can be altered, but may be difficult. But if you move to another IPS, you may have to buy a new one, or get them to also give you one.

The TG582n isnt to  tied down in the firmware, you'll just need to change the username and password set in their when you switch it should come up the first time you go to see a webpage and it can't authenticate.

Not that you would want to use that modem for anything other than a paperweight anyway..

This!!! After having trouble with our one continuously disconnecting us many times a day i bought a new one.
The Telecom tgv8857 or whatever went straight in the wheelie bin. So many people have problems with that one it isn't funny.

I've got one that is a year old and it is pretty good. But I did hear that it could only be used with telecom, but sounds like that isn't the case. I think it was their older models that weren't that good.

TG585(v6/7/8) series was a nightmare, the TG582n was pretty good for a standard ISP modem, never really used thier latest one(s?). But all of them are able to be used on other networks, I believe people keep on thinking about the old PACE(2wire) modems that had firmware tied into Telecom. That or they're getting confused with all the Telecom brading everywhere on the config pages.

I can't think of any company that supplies modems with thier connections that still do that now.

3 of us went to Telecom at the same time recently and we've all got the standard white Telecom offering modem. 1 has just failed after 3 months or so and was replaced free of charge.

Telecoms set up associate something in the modem with the account holder automatically, presumably the MAC address perhaps or the phone number of the line it's on? It all means that the set up on Telecom accounts is very easy, but there's nothing stopping you from moving to another provider. With the new provider you'll just have to enter the correct user name and password for that ISP is all.

A few of the ISPs just seem to assume that provided you are connected they dont care about the authentication part.

The modem will need 'something' in the authentication fields though.
So xxx@xxx.com and a password of xxx would make the modem happy and the ISP doesnt use the details anyway.
I think they worked out that they spent 50% of their support time talking people through changing authentication details on their modems and in fact they supply the ADSL service to your house - socket on the wall - so who cares about authentication. It's as useful as having a password on your electricity...
