Sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere, but I'm stuck.

I have a 2tb seagate external hard drive connected up to my TG589vn VDSL modem, supplied by Telecom. My windows 7 laptop can see this hard drive just fine, ditto the PS3 etc. However, my Macbook, whilst I can ping the IP address that the TG589vn gives the hard drive, I cannot access it - getting an error of "There was a problem connecting to the server "XYZ". The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to solve the problem"

All I have found is one post on the apple forums alluding to "The problem is that the Technicolor/Thompson router does not support the latest SMB standards that Macintosh computers are equipped with."

The OP on the above that had the problem reported rebooting their modem and it working with a firmware upgrade installed, however, I'm running the latest firmware on my modem according to the telecom website, so I'm left wondering:

(a) is there something soon coming that will fix this?
(b) is there a workaround that won't cost me anything?

I had similar issues with a hard drive connected through a Fritz!Box. I found a third-party app called SMBUp which manages your samba share instead of using the native OSX support. It works a treat, solved the problem I had. It's free, too (well, they take donations but it does not nag for it and works fully if you don't).

Can't remember the URL but I'm sure a google search will turn it up.

Cheers, I found it, installed it and couldn't get the service to start. I shall resign myself to having been "sold" a dud until some new firmware on the TG589vn hopefully fixes this, but I won't hold my breath.
