So I'm currently on the 500GB Telecom VDSL plan paying $129 per month.

However as a Tivo owner I've had unmetered data for more than a year now.

Is it in my interest to switch to the 30GB plan and save myself $40 per month while my data is unmetered?

Thoughts?

From what I understand, its not going to be uncapped for much longer

Sshhh, stop reminding them about this! :p

If I had a small subset of users, and I had to build a special monitoring system for them, and I could see that they (on average) weren't using a whole lot of data now, I might just be inclined to leave them uncapped alogether.

So if you're currently with Telecom but you wern't when the TiVo was purchased and registered, can you be put onto this uncapped 'plan' or have they stopped offering this?

It's not a 'plan', it's a limitation of one of their internal systems.  From what I understand it is not easy for them to separate the usage/billing of Tivo (which is unmetered) from the usage of xDSL.  But as noted this was never going to last, Telecom have advised us (yes I am one of these customers) in writing that it will return to being metered.  It just hasn't happened as of yet.

I haven't been advised of a return to monitored usage.

I assumed they put it in the too hard basket to differentiate Tivo data from other data and were going to let it run forever.

There must be a reasonable number of people in this boat if three of us in this forum this morning are getting unmetered data. I still haven't told my kids that the data is unmetered - otherwise the shock to their systems going back to 80GB might kill them...

When this situation first occurred, Telecom posted letters to all affected users advising of the problem.  This letter noted a date when this would be fixed, however that date was last year sometime from memory.  I haven't had any usage since at least August 2012 (My Telecom only goes back 1 year) and I think a second letter was mailed out with a new date.

I am sure as GregV noted, it is a small base of users who are affected, and I assume as smaller set again who exceed their actual plan limits.  Fixing anything like this internally is going to cost them a LOT (I worked at Telecom in the past and know the cost of internal proejcts) so they have to justify the cost-benefit ratio, and with a general focus on reducing costs I am sure there are other higher priorty projects (UFB, VDSL, 4G, etc) that mean this will be a while coming.

Yeah but as someone mentioned earlier if the pool of people isn't using massive amounts of data then why would Telecom care to fix it?  I pay for 500GB and never get close.  The most I've hit is 200GB in one month but I'd say my average is around 100-150GB per month.

Someone WILL care inside Telecom - revenue leakage will be causing headaches for the finance people at least.  But finance don't run I.T. projects.

I have this on my line I pay for at my parents place for their use.
They barely use 20GB in a heavy month, such a waste :( lol
