If you can get your hands on a Motorola Moto G  that sounds like a good bargain fone.  At present not available here  apart from Mobicity.  Motorola don't seem to respond on their FB page  for requested from AU and NZ about this fone..

Not quite as cheap but has anyone had a play with the Telecom R880H?  Looks quite interesting

The G isn't 4G capable, so VF & Telecom may be hesitant to stock it as a new device, especially given that there don't seem to be _any_ Motorola devices stocked by either company. No NZ distributors?

I asked Motorola on their FB page and they say it will be sold in NZ, they don't say when  so best guess is late January / February..

Verizon in the US that has a LTE only policy will be  selling the Moto G on their prepay service.
