The parents appears to be interested with the Christmas promotion at the moment.  With Skinny there is a need to get a $16/mo or a $4/wk plan/combo right?    Unlike the others they cannot just get prepay and pay a couple of bucks right?  With the Christmas specials if they get $300 of credit that would just auto debit $16 per month right ... so there is not really a yearly expiry right?   Cheers ...

You can go on standard rates without a weekly/monthly combo.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

What behoder said is correct, If you are not on a $8 or $16 monthly combo or $4 weekly combo you topup and pay the standard rates, You can see those at https://skinny.co.nz/1948_EN.htm

Currently the rates are 8 cents a text, 39 cents per minute and 39 cents per MB of data and 39 cents for a picture message (MMS)

If they end up spending more though It would be better for them to go on one of the monthly or weekly plans. They are really good value, plus if you bring your number from another network your first month is free

Thats great:)

Check out the christmas deals they've got going at the moment here https://skinny.co.nz/2885_EN

Example $50 credit comes with a free $50 phone, $100 credit comes with a free $100 phone, $300 credit comes with a $300 phone,

Or else you can check if your current phone will work here http://skinny.co.nz/willmyphonework and if it is pick up a sim for $2 here https://skinny.co.nz/2860_EN.htm

These online sims come with free 1000 skinny minutes each month you are on the $16 stretch combo but the $2 sims offer ends in a few days so get in quick! Which means if you're all on skinny you can call each other

Also check out the monthly plans here and the weekly plans here

If you are on the standard rates, does the prepay credit have an expiry date?

Yeah it does.  The standard rates are better for my mum esp .. as they are bit less than 2D's prepay rates and the $5min top up annually.

Will my credit ever expire?   If you don't top up for 12 months your account will expire. If this happens any credit you have loaded on your account will be lost. However if you don't want this to happen, you can either: 1. Top up before the account expires, or: 2. Transfer your credit to another Skinny SIM. Find out about transfering

For myself damn - looks like Optimus G is a 900 network phone unlike the Nexuses.  But re: the Christmas specials - they are free phone thrown in but the price of the credit purchase required you can get the same phone for like 1/2 price at DSE and The Warehouse or even lesser.

Can Telecom XT Huawei Y300 be used on Skinny?  Noel Leeming or someone has a $99 special on it 4" screen size.

The Credit is valid for 24 months from activation,

I believe you might have to topup atleast once a year though so your account stays active which might mean buying a $5 topup or something

Oh, that's strange. They should just make it that the account AND credit expires within 12 or 24 months.

Hmm.. you should ask if that credit towards a phone can be transferred as extra Skinny credit? That would be nice!

Yes the telecom y300 should work on Skinny,

and my mistake, I believe the credit will stay unless your account deactivates from not being topped up for a year, (I think its a year)

It just says that 24 month thing about the christmas offer

LivingSkinny (Paul) should be able to confirm this for me?

Quote from the skinny terms and conditions

9. You must add credit to your Skinny Prepaid Account at least once every 12 months, otherwise your Skinny Prepaid Account will be deactivated, or expired. When your Skinny Prepaid Account is deactivated all credit and accrued Skinny Dollars will expire. You will not receive a refund for any unused or expired credit or Skinny Dollars. If this happens, clause 10.2 will apply.

And while you can get cheaper phones elsewhere, I reckon the free credit is pretty good, because you'd spend that anyway and you're getting a phone aswell
