For curiosity I put a Skinny Sim into a HTC Wildfire phone which according to GSM Arena is a 3G 900/2100Mhz phone.  It doesn't work.  The Skinny site says just 850Mhz and the Telecom site says 850/2100Mhz.  Does 2100Mhz only work on Telecom and has anyone tried to get it working at least in the big cities?

Skinny says
If your mobile device is 3G and compatible with WCDMA/UMTS, 850MHz frequency you can use it on the skinny network.

https://support.skinny.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/215

Telecom says:
Our 3G network, use the 850mhz and 2100mhz frequencies.

If your phone isn't compatible with EITHER of the 850mhz or 2100mhz frequencies, it's likely to receive limited or no reception, meaning calling, texting and data will perform poorly or not at all.

From Skinny:

https://skinny.co.nz/2374_EN.htm

What you need to know

Our 3G WCDMA (UMTS) network uses the HSPDA 850 MHz and HSPDA 2100 MHz frequencies.
If your phone isn't compatible with EITHER HSPDA 850 MHz or HSPDA 2100 MHz, it's likely to receive limited or no reception, meaning calling, texting and data will perform poorly or not at all.

Skinny use Telecom's XT network which operates on both UMTS 850 and 2100 MHz. 850MHz is the main frequencies and 2100 is only used as a fill in.

If you take your phone to the CBDs of the main centres like Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton... etc you should be able to pick up some 2100MHz signal.

Using phone that did not support UMTS 850 on Telecom/Skinny = waste of time. It's practically useless. Main network is 850.

You can use all parts of telecom's 3G network regardless of frequency. Their 4G network is inaccessible on skinny.

As above. Using a 2100MHz only handset on Telecom NZ/Skinny is a waste of time and will test your patience.
