I'll go through a bit more than just the Add-ons to give a full picture.
When you buy a Combo you are allocated the quota for the relevant week or 30 days, depending upon the Combo. That is then yours, so if you deactivate the Combo the quota remains until its expiry date. Having it active means that it will renew at the end of the period. You can therefore deactivate a Combo and then purchase it again. Any remaining quota will be there until its normal expiry date and you will also get the new quota. Remember that your renewal date and time would then change to when you re-purchase. One thing to be careful of though is if you are on a rollover minute Combo (currently the $16 Stretch) as by deactivating the Combo you would lose any accumulated rollover minutes - to keep these you have to keep the Combo active.
With Add-ons, you can have one of each type of Add-on associated with the plan active at a time. By having it active means that it will renew when the Combo renews.
Again when you purchase the Add-on the quota is yours until its expiry date. Therefore you can deactivate the Add-on and the quota will still be yours until it expires. You can then purchase the Add-on again to get additional quota.
Add-ons pro-rate when you buy them. What this means is that they align with the renewal date of your Combo so if you purchase them during the Combo cycle they will adjust to match the remaining period until renewal. An example will explain this best: -
I take the $16 Stretch plan and purchase the $20 1GB Add-on at the same time. So the cost is $36 and I get 1.5GB.
On day 15 I have used all my data. I then deactivate the $20 1 GB Add-on and re-purchase it. I will be charged $10 and receive an additional 500MB, as the Add-on has pro-rated to align with my Combo.
This can be a bit of a pain towards the end of the Combo period as you get progressively smaller allocations - albeit at lower cost. Whilst this is fair from a purchase perspective it can be annoying if you just need the additional data. We are currently looking at what to do to get around this (and I welcome peoples ideas or preferences) but in the meantime you can :
- Purchase the one off Data 48 Add-on which gives an extra 48MB for $2, doesn't renew and doesn't align with the Combo (it is just a booster) - Purchase the additional Add-ons at the start of the plan if you know how much data you need for the month, as the Pro-Rating won't have the same effect.

I should have mentioned on the Data48 Add-on the quota is valid for 48 Hours.
Also when on a Combo there is no data overage, so if you use all your quota then data stops working. This is to prevent you from chewing through your credit unexpectedly on a per MB rate. You just need to buy an Add-on to get going again.
