We all now how much data doing a speedtest on 4g can use.. So I was thinking

Since Telecom has its own speedtest servers in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, Would it be possible to Zero-Rate them for Telecom customers? So people can check their speed without killing their data allowance

Yea, I don't see that happening. Mobile data is not cheap to move around.

Hummmm

Your Telecom for Mobile = sub 1mb of traffic perhaps serving up a HTML Page and a few images. And you can top-up if you don't have credit.
LTE 4G speed test = 120MB on a full test.

Rinse and repeat with 100k+ LTE subscribers, and your network would melt under the load.

I can't see it ever happening, as the cost of Mobile data is getting it over the Mobile Data network. Once it is in the fixed core life is much cheaper.

Why does it matter whether it leaves their network or not?

Why should somebody obsessed by running speedtests all day (for absolutely zero benefit) get free data while somebody who wants to watch YouTube (which also doesn't leave their network) has to pay?

Zero rating of data fundamentally causes problems with net neutrality (which you can argue is a myth anyway). All bits and bytes should be treated equally. Zero rating a site such as YT which allows you to view billing information is very different.

I have one customer who gets annoyed when his (advertised at 1.5mbit) rural service drops from 20mbit to 19mbit and starts clicking email speedtest and 'letting me know'

maybe you should limit him down to his advertised speed, so he has something to complain about...

and reply with thanks for letting me know that you was getting way more speed then you should have, with out your help it most like would have stay at 19mbs not 1.5

I would love to do this, but I have a few administration reasons that outweigh it.

NFI how traffic accounting works internally so just interested.

Also - as been said, gfl getting anything mobile data zero rated, ever.

They do it with 0.facebook and your telecom

But yeah, I guess I understand. Its just an idea
