This is weird. I think OP is the first person I knew who are keen to go on contract??

Other than phone 'discount' which you usually end up paying more than buying it outright, why would you want to go on contract?

Plus you can go on a 12 month deferred payment scheme with Telecom (and perhaps there is a 24 month one too?? not sure) so you can change to any contract as you are not tied to a particular contract.

That's how I purchased my wife's 4S, and my S4.

Yup, that's right!

Going on a term plan is kinda one step backward IMO - I think vodafone loves signing up people on term contract.

For some reason, with certain devices they won't do anything other than 24 month deferred payment (iPhone 5S at launch for example). Even asking about 12 months deferred payment gets you looked at funny.

So one of the devices that has the least amount of margin in them at the same time there is the least amount of supply... And you wonder why they are only offered on a 24 month plan day 1.

I only signed contract to get the iPhone 5 on launch day, which was really really annoying to be honest. And I think at the time it was the only way to get deferred payment plan. I'd only do it again to get the iPhone as I'd be buying it anyway, but would rather not. So there are other reasons for signing a contract.

Like tardtasticx my wife had to sign a 24mth contract to secure a 5s on launch day, while some were lucky enough to buy on deferred payments/open plan the store she went to believed they could only sell the 5s against a 24mth contract plan.

The phone subsidy was definitely not a reason for signing, she received a $200 subsidy despite the plan costing $10/mth more than open plan (i.e. 24 x $10 = $240 so $40 more to go on contract doh - subsidy now $300 but wasn't back then). fast forward a few months and we get a $10 subsidy for combining mobile and broadband so this eased the pain slightly

why are you trying to read telecom?

it is an advertisement. they say all kinds of stuff to target a certain demographic with ONE advertisement. sometimes advertisements are shown just so you remember they are around - obviously not this one.

they neither want or not want to you to sign a contract. it's nothing personal, only business.

do you want to be a giganaire by any chance?

another way of putting it:

if X company tells you in an advertisement to quit your job and sell all your stuff on trademe - you would quit your job and sell everything?

i didn't know advertisements have such a strong effect on people ;p
