Hi everyone,

Chorus have announced some sweet new UFB plans - check them out here (http://www.chorus.co.nz/chorus-accelerate-delivers-step-change-to-new-zealand-s-broadband-capability) if you haven't already.

Perfect timing for us as we're about to kick off our customer trials for UFB in the next few weeks.

But before we do that, we'd like to get some feedback from you guys on what sort of speeds you like the look of and how you'd like to see us do it.

We definitely want to keep to the main key points about Bigpipe our customers love - which means sticking to stuff like unlimited data, 'leave anytime' contracts, BYO modem, and super fast online support.

We also don't want to complicate things by offering up every option under the sun, so which plans would you like to see us offer?

As an indication of price - the entry level 100/20 will most likely be the same as our naked ADSL ($79).

yep.
But you can buy pretty much any plan you want - it's just defined as business grade which means it's a lot more expensive.

well of course, but one step at a time. Getting in with all LFCs is a massive amount of work as they all have totally different systems, require separate handovers and separate contracts. That's why other ISPs have taken so long to do it. We'll get there eventually of course.

Why do you like a 50/20 plan when the new entry level will be 100/20? Should we take that 100Mbps plan and reduce the speed to 50Mbps down?

I'm thinking of it from the point of view where you can offer something "dirty cheap" just to get them onto the UFB network.
There will be people out there who are on ADSL2+ and likely have no intention of upgrading as they are happy with what they got.

ah I see. It would likely be a little cheaper to offer as we wouldn't need to buy as much bandwidth, but the wholesale input cost would still be the same so I'm not sure it would make enough of a difference to be worthwhile e.g. it might only save $5 off the price.

Part of me is all 1000/1000 and 200/200, but in reality I think 100/50 would be adequate for me, and 200/100 would be nice.

I'd love the 200/200 plan,

I doubt anything except the fastest nodes in NZ will be able to support these higher speeds anyhow, or am I wrong?

i.e. Microsoft/Akamai/Steam Servers/Origin servers.. Maybe Amazon S3 (I heard they're coming to Auckland)

The 1000/1000 sounds cool too! I could host my own Cloud? lol :)

It would be tough to pull down 200Mbps from any single source, but if you are trying to do multiple things concurrently (e.g. lots people in a shared house) it will help. Not to mention things like maintaining a good ratio for seeding torrents of legal content.

And, looking further to the future, once more people get on these kinds of speeds more applications will be developed to utilise the speeds better - 4k streaming, cloud gaming, etc.

I'm pretty gutted that my house doesn't yet have a date for UFB, so it will be at least 2017 before I get it. I do get pretty decent VDSL though, 45 down, 10 up, so can't complain too much, but I would like the lower latency of UFB.

Nice!! My VDSL2 is syncing at 60mb down/10mb up with BigPipe ! :)
(I have moved my VDSL Router behind the fridge, as the opposite wall is my demarc point, moving the router from my hallway cupboard to the wall opposite the demarc gave me an additional 6MB (The Cabinet is literally 300 meters away)

Fibre is currently being installed in my street, at the moment they've laid the green tubing, and digging the pits for the fibre access terminals? So excited!
I wonder how long it takes from the green tubes going in, to getting Fibre service?

depends on a whole host of different things unfortunately. Your best shot is if you live in your own standalone house with direct access to the street (not down a 'right of way').

God job on router placement. Can make all the difference :D

100/100 would be great as it would make PC backup to cloud much easier to do.

I'd quite like 200/200 but wouldn't want to pay more than $120.

I'm pretty happy with the current Bigpipe VDSL offering and price at $99 (it was even better when it was free).

The reality is that my biggest limitation on internet speed is my home wireless and if I fixed that and went on to 100/100 the limitation would probably be the PC itself.
