So I've tried contacting Telecom and haven't received a reply in 2 weeks. I'm experiencing random spikes of ping while gaming. I contacted telecom and was told to run a traceroute when it occurs. Now I'm not too tech savvy so I don't know if this is packet loss but I was told that if anything is timing out within the first couple hops, there is a problem.

That is very hard to read, but I take it you're referring to the lines that show: Request timed out.

The 'Request timed out' message can be due to a number of reasons, including some network providers blocking ICMP packets from their hosts/routers so they won't respond to traceroute or ping. This is often done due to security concerns that ICMP could potentially be used as part of some sort of denial of service attack.

is this over wifi by any chance?

your getting pretty high pings to your router, that would normally indicate possibly a congested wifi link.

The time outs on the second hop are not unusual for Telecom.

The high latency on the first hop maybe wifi, or it could be that you have an older Speedtouch like the ST536v6 router that just does that.

If it's a Speedtouch thing (not Wifi) it doesn't effect the latency though out to the Internet as the hops after that show. The speedtouch does some nice QoS and I've watched it drop packets in the router but only when it's downloading or uploading flat out.

FYI the newer technicolor jobs don't have the 99ms ICMP latency when testing the first hop.

Otherwise to be honest, it really doesn't look that out of the norm for an ADSL connection to Telecom. The hop looks fine in the first two trace routes (if it's a Speedtouch and not Wifi).

The third trace route, I noticed a reply went west on the 3rd hop on the first try, not sure what that one is about though.

You'd need to look in to the router's logs and see what kind of errors on the line you're getting if any, causing any hickups too.

When the game glitches, are you monitoring CPU and memory usage at the same time to see if it's the machine in some shape or form? Tried pausing any anti-virus while playing a game?

It doesn't really show any issues other than as others have mentioned above - the high latency on the first hop which at a first glance would point to using WiFi that's congested.

I'm using a wired connection and my router is the technicolour TG582n. I've also made sure nothing is updating or downloading and my memory usage is normal. I make sure to set my antivirus to gaming mode but nothing's worked.

What game(s) are you playing on what server(s)?

The Technicolor router and the 1st Telecom hop de-prioritise ICMP traffic (compared to UDP and TCP), a standard tracerroute to the NZ Herald isn't going to be that useful.

Probably need to do a tcp traceroute and/or UDP ping to the gaming server(s) he's playing on, most games have some inbuilt latency graph or monitoring anyway.

League of legends on the oceanic server. Can't get the ip of the exact server because each game is played on a different server. I've also started to play Counter Strike: GO and I'm experiencing the same problems, Random ping spikes, rubber banding etc.

Have a look at uding the pathping commaidn line utility - conbines ping and tracert functionality to give you a view over a period of time.

If you want a GUI, have a look at PingPlotter:  http://www.pingplotter.com/freeware.html
