Hi all,

Well I've got to move out for earthquake repairs, OK so thought I'd pre-emptively ring up Telecom to get an idea of the process.
And well we can transfer the number easily enough it would seem, but when it comes to the broadband that is a different matter.
I didn't want to switch the broadband, more just keep it at the current location. (Place I am moving into already has broadband, all be it ADSL).

But I got told the broadband in essence got disconnected, and they can re-connect it again, BUT I have to sign up with them for another 12 months to make that happen. I've got no qualms with sticking with Telecom (Been with them for years), but for them to force me to sign up for another 12 months because of something out of my control just because I'm out of the house for 8 weeks and won't be using it is a bit on the nose.

I'm assuming they are thinking along the lines of "disconnect it because they are not there and obviously do not want to pay for something they cannot use", then we have to reconnect them, Woot, lets call that a new connection even though they have been with us for years.

Has anyone else struck this?

Cheers

there are costs involved that are passed on by chorus so they have to recover them somehow.

We are not talking about wiring or cabinet work.
I just want them to put the internet part on hold for 8 weeks for billing purposes as we will not be able to use it.
I don't want the internet connection moved or disconnected, so Chorus shouldn't come into it.
We are coming back in 8 weeks, whats the point of disconnecting it, That I could understand costing money.

There is no such thing as putting a connection on hold. Chorus would need to disconnect the line and reconnect it. If it stayed connected Telecom would be charged for the connection in which case it would only be fair that they charged you.

Unfortantly you'll find most isps won't put a fixed line connection "On hold" as wether you are using it or not, If it is connected your ISP will be charged by chorus for that line.

ask if they will put you on a lesser package or put billing on hold, you never know they may do.

Why don't you just divert your calls to your temporary place. You will have to pay to keep the service on at your old place.

this would be what ild look at. cut down your costs, clearly you accept yourself you will have to pay something by the fact that you dont want a disconnection.

I'm diverting the phone, but the diverting the internet is massively different.
Could be Vodafone or some other supplier supply internet to the temporary place.
Ideal situation would be Telecom already provide to that address, but there is no guarantee, so I was looking at worst case scenario that it was not Telecom who supplied to the place I'm moving to.
(I've only just firmed up a place today, so I suppose I can start that discussion, BUT that would involve chorus work none the less as they would have to disconnect the old connection).

Telecom can put a phone number in a hold position as such to hold it for you for when you move back.
Doing that and getting it back supposedly costs nothing, Well surely Chorus would still charge Telecom for the phone line to the house if it was active but Telecom had just put the phone number on hold as such so no-one else can get it.

For such a short period of time the most logical solution would be to keep paying the bill but get Telecom to put a call forward in place.

back in 2008 when I moved cities, I managed to get my broadband account in city 1 on a one month 'hold' from Vodafone (no monthly fee) and when I transferred this account/connection to city 2, I then continued. Mind you I was committed to 12 months…but in saying this Ive never switched ISP since joining ihug !

I remember back in the, uh, "olden days" (ie, pre-broadband) Telecom would let you "park" a landline, so the number was reserved to you until such time as you decided to reconnect. From memory this was for up to three months - but broadband would be a totally different story.

that would be back when they actually owned the network and didn't have to pay anyone $$$ every month whether the line was live or not.

Well go figure, talk to another Telecom rep tonight and all of a sudden because it is EQC related they will knock us down to dialup and back up again when we get back for free. (Well I'd say the dial-up connection would cost something, still better than paying for broadband). A heck of a better chat than with the first rep, this one seemed to have better information about the options than the first person I talked to.
It took me 4 phone calls tonight however to get this one rep (I hung up on others before they picked up as the phone rang too long).
The person who I talked to is sending through information around the whole phone/internet thing via e-mail, I've gone from thinking Telecom are money hungry sods to they had processes in place to deal with it, but not everyone knew about it.
Also this person looked at a temporary move of the phone number, but that is a no go unless we want to install a second line ourselves. So all told conflicting information it would seem, BUT I'll be honest, once I heard that overseas ring tone tonight I hung up and dialed 123 again, but it seems like a good result all told just by doing that. (Well better than the first rep at least)
