Hello BigPipe,

I have a new house that will need a new connection. I understand you guys don't do this stuff so how do I normally get a line connected to the house without a telco doing it on my behalf?

I know the nearest pole has a spare connection. There is currently a cable in conduit to the house. So I guess I need two air gaps plugged to let the data flow. The one at the power pole and one just outside the house.

How does one go about this? I can't contact chorus direct can I?

You're doing the right thing by contacting your ISP BigPipe as Chorus only works with ISPs not with end users.

I believe Telecom will do this for you for a fee. You may, or may not, need to sign up to a landline plan at the same time.

I don't believe these require a 12 month contract, so you can ditch it after one month if you just want naked broadband - but obviously you'll need to check with them first to make sure that's the case.

I thought that was the case, I'll have a look into it.

As an aside, I know you try to keep costs down but what's the advantage of not doing new house connections? Not a complaint just wondering.

Probably needs a whole different provisioning system interfaced with, which has development costs and most houses are already good to go on the chorus network and copper is a slowly dying network so why do that work?

Being completely honest, it keeps things simpler for us.

For the very small amount of people that actually need it, it's not worth us spending the time/money building the processes, training staff etc, especially when they can get it via Telecom pretty easily if necessary.

We'd rather spend that money on moar international bandwidth, getting UFB up and running, and other stuff like that to give the best connection possible.
