So I was working on a client site dealing with email issues - customer pulls out a notice saying that XtraHost is closing and all websites/domains hosted with Telecom are being closed...wtf?

No worries - great time to upsell clients to your own services for the IT Pro's out there.

Can you post the actual notice? It could be a scam.

You are probably getting some false information. Did it come to your friend through another hosting operation perhaps?

If we're talking about Telecom's old old web hosting service, then apparently yes it is closing.... on September 12 - http://www.premiumhomecare.com

Good thing they have an index on that page... It makes it easier for other webhosting business to contact those people and try to get their business. If I were anyone in that list I'd expect unsolicited emails, phone calls, door knockers...

That looks like a  bit of a suspect domain name., it is a dot com for a start and the domain is so generic it could be for anything.
I believe they moved all their websites onto their newer service a long time ago. I beleive their newer hosting is like what they do with email and yahoo, where their hosting service is subcontracted to a third party these days using overseas servers.

I suspect most of the links on it will be dead links or hosted elsewhere. The ones with xtra in the url will likely be abandoned.  I clicked a few and they were dead. Web hosts would have to be pretty desperate to use the list, and they can't email them, because that would be spamming. Although that doesn't seem to stop some of them.

That looks to be one of the free subdomain hosting,  that most ISPs give away as part of their ISP services. So many will likely just be personal websites or abandoned. People maybe better to buy a domain. and host any website with a webhost using NZ servers and NZ based support these days, rather than using their ISP for this sort of thing.

Yeah pretty much. I built a website for a small business on this platform many moons ago. I notice that business is still on the list of websites despite no longer sitting on XtraHost.

In regards to the odd domain there's an old Telecom support email attached to it - https://who.is/whois/premiumhomecare.com

Pretty poor they haven't updated their records, or that they have even got that customer directory accessible to the public.

That domain name isn't Spark owned, it's privately owned. It is hosted on the Telecom Business Hub platform however.

The XtraHost platform is really really old, not surprising that it's finally closing (much like smtp.xtra.co.nz)

Ahh I see. I did wonder why it was registered by some guy in Karori.

Got to wonder how they have got access to all the details and are publically displaying them. smtp.xtra.co.nz is just being replaced by send.xtra.co.nz, so it isn't closing, so if you have got a domain you can still use send.xtra.co.nz and authenticate the domain via the spark/telecom/xtra/bubble/yahoo etc or whatever they now call it, webmail interface
