I've convinced my sister-in-law to sign up to big pipe.

She's not very tech savy so is there a modem she can purchase that will work out of the box that I can tell her to purchase?

Like the Telecom modem http://www.spark.co.nz/shop/internet/modems/

Unless it's a modem supplied by the ISP, otherwise any other modem she purchases will require configuration with the ISP username/pw.

we authenticate by port, so we don't need username/password and most modems won't need any configuration at all.

that one will work straight out of the box.

However, you should only bother getting that if  she is getting VDSL, since it is $150

If she is signing up to the FAST or BASIC plan, then you only need an ADSL2 modem which can be had for much less

You can get one second hand off trademe
The TG582n (Telecom ADSL2+) modem will be fine, and work with no configuration (maybe a factory reset). There are lots of these on trademe - they typically sell for $30-40.
example:

Alternatively, if you prefer a brand new modem, I would go for this one
http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=MODTPL8960&name=TP-Link-TD-W8960N-300M-Wireless-N-All-In-One-ADSL2

for just under $70.  It should also work with no configuration needed.

Cool thanks I'll find out what plan she intends on getting.

I thought of the Telecom modem simply because it future proofs her as it covers ADSL, VDSL and fibre.

Appreciate your repsonse BigPipe.

Can also get the Telecom HG630b for about $80 on Trademe at the moment.
