Vodafone was handing out this modem to customers.

You have to use advanced settings to get it to work on other ISPs.

This is already widely known on Geekzone plus this router is no-longer handed out.

what about the vodafone VDSL and UFB routers (hg659) - will that work with bigpipe?

Yep, The Vodafone Station and the VDSL programed version of the HG659 will work on bigpipe with no configuration neede.
The UFB version will require you to go and setup a VDSL connection on it AFAIK as they come pre configured for UFB.

Yep, The Vodafone Station and the VDSL programed version of the HG659 will work on bigpipe with no configuration neede.
The UFB version will require you to go and setup a VDSL connection on it AFAIK as they come pre configured for UFB.

No difference between UFB version and VDSL version.

So many people have trouble with this thing. This, plus the NF4V are the two most common modems to have setup problems.

The people who 'have trouble with this thing' are probably people who need something a bit more advanced than your average residential router. The thousands of people who don't even need to call us to have it set up at the onset don't seem to have issues.

My friend never had an issue setting up the NF4V for his Spark VDSL connection.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

They are yes - and work perfectly well for the purpose they were designed for: providing a standard internet and wifi connection. Businesses who have more complex needs use their own routers to perform more complex tasks.

Heh - I offered to give my hg556a away on Geekzone when I got VDSL installed but no-one wanted it so it's now acting as a 2.4GHz wifi extender. Aside from the standard ADSL/ethernet/wifi usage it previously had I also 'hacked' it to allow SIP and set it up for 2Talk and also used it as a print server for a printer with only a USB connection - all worked flawlessly. Now I've reconfigured to extend the reach of my wifi it's the same thing - no issues. Mostly agree with Demeter but I also think that as the admin password is widely available there's a number of people out there who don't quite understand what they're doing that have gotten themselves into sticky situations.
