Hi,

So I have a Technicolor TG587n for my fibre. The current model I have has:

802.11n 2x2 (150Mb) WiFi
1x Gigabit WAN (fibre) Port
1x Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port
3x 100 Megabit Fast Ethernet ports

Where as the Huawei HG659/HG659b Gateway has:

802.11ac (3x3) WiFi providing an up to 1.3Gbit per second wireless transmission rates
4x Gigabit Ethernet LAN Ports
Built-in Security Features

Is there any chance I can get this to replace my current one? I have devices which also have Wireless AC.

Unless things have changed, the HG659b is for business customers. You'll have to buy it if you're a residential customer. The HG630b is for residential customers.

Talk to Spark about upgrade possibilities, but you may have to agree to a new contract term to get a residential modem upgrade (they don't owe you anything). Use the online chat feature.

If you want a better router, go to a shop and buy one would be my suggestion.

Unless he wants something supported by his provider in the event of issues.

If you're ok with the HG630b, you could try seeing if they have any deals. They often used to have a 'meet me halfway' deal for the consumer modems, especially if your modem is faulty :)

If you upgrade to vdsl or fibre they also give you a 630b.

You'd need to pay for it because IIRC you only get it 'free' on a business plan. With that being said, I've been using it and it has been very reliable so far. Not particularly fancy but it does get the job done with minimum fuss and worries.

I'm using the Mikrotik RB951 personally and find it rock solid for my 100mbit UFB connection, it is one of the cheapest and best performing routers you can get but there is a bit of a learning curve getting it up and running.
