Spark has partnered with Facebook and Twitter to launch Socialiser - giving customers 1GB of free data to access both mobile apps every month, for the life of their plan.

General Manager for Spark Home, Mobile and Business, Jason Paris says: “Over 1.8 million New Zealanders use Facebook every single day. 78% of those or 1.4 million access Facebook on their mobile devices and that’s why we’re launching Socialiser.

“Refreshing their Facebook newsfeed or checking their Twitter timelines is now just a part of our customers’ day to day lives so giving them more data to do this makes perfect sense to us.”

“This partnership between Spark and various social media companies is the way of the future as customers continue to connect more and more over these channels on their mobiles. That's why Socialiser isn't just a short-term offer.”

“Our customers continue to use more and more data to connect over social media so this isn’t a deal just available to customers over summer. If they activate Socialiser online, before 3 February next year they can take advantage of it for the full life of their pack or plan with us for free, no strings attached.” said Jason.

Socialiser can be switched on for free by going to www.spark.co.nz/socialiser before 3 February, 2015. Spark customers on $19 or $29 prepaid packs and consumer Pay Monthly plans are eligible. After 3 February, Spark customers who opt in to Socialiser online can pay $9 per month to get the deal.

Official apps only. Windows Phone not supported. Kinda limits things a bit. Still, can't please all of the people all of the time.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Yep, this along with the socialiser (= Facebook time) will definitely see the gf jumping ship from 2D.

I can't believe Spark fell for this, they'll now have to deal with the same problem that every other provider who thinks this is a great idea does - which is content that customers believe is zero rated that isn't as it's embedded rather than originating on either FB or Twitter. Good luck to them, they'll need it.

That's quite an impressive improvement to the $19 package.  I currently pay $12.95 per month for Spotify premium at home, so this is an immediate saving of that amount if I switch to the music package.  And with the socialiser data allowance, I'm unlikely to run out of the allocated 500MB with my other apps.

Nice one Spark

Was thinking the same thing. But on iOS its quite easy to distinguish embedded content as you are taken into a web browser in the Facebook app.

Or maybe spark will zero rate this data too, hence only supporting the official Facebook apps (this would be very ideal).

They've teamed up with facebook to do it so maybe they've zero rated the cdn's etc too

Im looking forward to see if Vodafone, 2degrees or even Skinny are going to respond to this

Seems like a good deal, and there's probably no harm in it.  But in reading through the T&Cs, there are so many exceptions, it's hard to see what is left:

  • Standard charges will apply including but not limited to the following:
    (a) The use of voice and video call features;
    (b) External links in newsfeed, timelines, walls, etc
    (c) External URLs in comments, messages, etc
    (d) Links to applications
    (e) Links to external advertisements
    (f) Enabling or navigating to features that rely on location services.
    (g) Facebook features that navigate you out of the site and/or application such as “Get Directions”, “Buy Tickets”, etc. and/or importing contacts from an external email domain, clicking on a user’s clicking on a user's email address and so on
    (h) Background camera app usage on Facebook
    (i) Pages Manager apps on Facebook
    (j) Using the Opera browser on Facebook or Twitter on your mobile device

Dont see why they just did it for the app instead of just doing *.facebook.com

Might have to consider adding a $19 pack again. Been running on just the $29 data addons recently
