A while ago there was some talk of one\some of the TelCo's offering the improved audio codecs for calls made to other mobiles on the same network, it's been noticed here that calls made from VF to VF with both parties using HTC One M8's sounds crystal clear, whereas a call made from VF to Spark using the same handsets sounds notably worse and a call from Spark to Spark is somewhere in the middle.

Regardless, moving from iPhone 4S's to the M8's has made a notable difference for all involved, but where are things at with regards to the TelCo's intercommunication using more modern audio CoDecs?

Spark are still not offering interconnects other than E1s, which are narrow band only.  So broadband codecs (ala HD Voice) from other carriers could not be supported by Spark until such time they replace their space-age equipment and start offering VoIP interconnects.

Exactly the same situation exists in the fixed line world. Despite G.722 being a great thing in the VoIP world, you'll only get to experience it on calls between customers on the same VoIP provider, or any other VoIP provider who may have an IP interconnect.

TDM still forms the basis of interconnection between telcos (not just in NZ, but globally), and nothing is going to really change in the short term.
