going to Thailand in a Cpl weeks wondered how I get on with a nokia lumia on a prepaid account no idea about roaming etc...nor prices of calls seems u have to pay for incoming calls as well? any advice appreciated
I was there earlier this year. Just buy a prepaid SIM in the airport, in the international terminal they're just before you leave to hit the road. It's a wide building so just walk along for a while. I forget the brand I got. They put it in and got it working, cost about $40 for a month. Hotel Wifi was great, I uploaded many GB of photos over the WiFi there, but I was staying in fancy hotels.
Agree with timmmay, picking up a local simcard at the Bangkok International Airport is the easiest and best option. They set it up for you at the booth there, it activates quickly and you are able to use it within minutes. I was even able to make a phone call to my brother while at the airport. The one we used when we visited Thailand last year was from dtac, I went into this very briefly in an old blog post last year (right down the bottom of the page of the long post) - Gives you an indication of the sign and deal they have specifically for tourists.
Plus one for buying a local sim (they're really cheap) and plus one for Dtac. I've been there quite a few times and they have good coverage over the entire country.
Have fun on your travels and don't be afraid about eating from street carts - if the locals are happy to, no problems. Politeness and respect goes a million miles over there - learn a few Thai phrases, they will be appreciated :-)
