I'm shortly moving to a new house that already has UFB up & running, so my trusty Draytek 130 VDSL modem is going to become redundant, has anyone had any experience with the Asus RT-AC68U as a UFB gateway when using it directly attached to the ONT?

I believe it supports the required VLAN tagging but have seen comments that this is not necessarily a guarantee of compatibility.

Running Merlin's implementation of the "stock" Asus firmware, I'd rather not try putting DD-WRT onto it as it apparently makes the 5Ghz AC wireless unstable.

Cheers,
Steve.

Looks like the same settings are on the 68, guess I'll give it a crack and see if it behaves!

VLAN 10 and using PPPoE using the username user@xtrabb.co.nz and a password of password.

The above link looks right for setting vlan 10.

I had VF UFB installed about a month ago and since then i keep getting complaints from the kids about frequent network drop outs on their Apple Air laptops - a well documented issue - (everything else seems to work fine), so i'm going to get the AC68U shortly and use that as my access point to see if that beefs up my signal.

I'd like to use the AC68U on its own as per above however my landline phone is now connected to the VF Huawei modem. I see the 68U doesn't have provision for a phone line (unless i went the VOIP route which i don't want to do at present).

So in order to continue having the phone line, it appears I am stuck with joining the 68U to the Huawei - the only reason for keeping the Huawei is because of the landline connection, which i would imagine would be the same issue for many others.

Grateful if anyone can confirm this?

if your phone is connected to the modem do you not have VOIP already? considering you are on UFB and its not pluged in to a phone socket

you could get an ATA to plug into an ethernet port on the modem and use that for the the phone

it looks like you do not have a land line, as a land line requires your phone to be plugged into the wall not a modem

Buying an AC68U to just use it as an access point is a complete waste of money. There are far better solutions for significantly less money.

Presumably you already have a VoIP connection if your phone is plugged into an existing Huawei router.

This is a well known issue but I do not know if the apple plays nicely with Asus

The only two ways to fix this that I know of is install an apple airport or ubiquiti wireless access point ( the ubiquiti founder worked in the apple airport team )

It is not a strength issue but there seems to be a compatibility issue.

Apple devices suffer from WiFi issues on many brands of hardware, UBNT included. Most Apple products are no longer WiFi alliance certified (they can't use the WiFi logo).

It's what happens when a company decides to create their own standard..

And Apple can't even include 802.1q support on their WAN ports, something that's now a basic requirement on most metro fibre and Ethernet networks now being deployed.

guess thats what happens when when you want a monopoly of peoples devices, but fail to realise the requirements are changing

OK thanks all i'll take the comments on board. One of the reasons to get the 68U was to significantly boost the strength of the existing signal, i find the Huawei signal is not that strong particularly outside.

Probably wouldn't be strong outside, put an access point on outside of house maybe.

That's not a fault, that's WiFi working perfectly as designed. People need to get out of the mindset that "one big powerful AP" is the perfect solution for WiFi. That's the cause of problems, not the solution. The reason the 2.4Ghz band is now munted in urban areas is because of people with devices with the power turned up that don't just stop at the boundary of their property, and create noise that affects everybody.

If you have a big house then multiple APs are the solution, particularly as we're moving to a world where 5Ghz is becoming the norm and 5Ghs propagation through building materials is a lot worse than 2.4Ghz
