Hi there,
Just joined big pipe after moving to Auckland.
Have a vodafone HG556a router.
Big Pipe have emailed me modem settings to change such as VPI etc but problem is I can't figure out where to change them?!
When I log on to modem from 192.168.1.1 there's nowhere to change those settings?
Can anyone help out? Sorry but of a noob.

It will likely just work as it is. You shouldn't need to change anything. That was my experience with an HG556a and BigPipe anyway.

I plugged it in and my old Vodafone network came up, but obviously does not work anymore?

we used that router in our flat. There is like an easy setup thing where you are supposed to put your vodafone username and password in, you just have to put something in there anything will do it just can't be blank then hit ok or whatever and it should just work.

Hey.

When we confirm your booking date for connection we also send out settings by default. In most cases if you're on the same type of connection (for example, Vodafone's ADSL to Bigpipe's ADSL) moving from one ISP to another you shouldn't need to change the settings.

If we've confirmed your connection has been completed and you're still having issues though, then you'd need to login to your modem and change them.

Not sure what you mean. You plugged it in and your WiFi came up but no internet, or you plugged it in and Internet worked? As I said, you shouldn't have to change anything.

If internet works, do a speedtest and see what it says is your provider in the bottom left. If it says something other than Vodafone then the swap over has happened (It may say Spark - does in my case)

Don't use the easy set up guide, it won't work.

So, an update (rather infuriating only being able to deal with Bigpipe through email!)
When I plugged in the modem, my old wireless connection came up but while I can connect, the Internet doesn't work.
Big pipe told me to go into the modems advanced settings and change the wap, but when I get to that screen it won't let me continue on.
Now Bigpipe reckon Vodafone sometimes change these modems so you can't use them!
They also reckon there is no connection at my house, but chorus rang me to say there was and all the lights on the modem are solid when plugged in?!
So frustrating. I need to up my geek levels.

BigPipe offers email support only to keep costs down. It's their model and they have this for people who are more tech inclined.

Now as for your immediate problem. Modems are not locked to Vodafone.

You say you are connecting to WiFi but can't browse. Please do the following:

  • Connected to WiFi, open command prompt and type ping www.geekzone.co.nz.
  • Still connected to WiFi, open command prompt and type nslookup www.geekzone.co.nz 8.8.8.8
In both cases please post the reply here.

Sorry mate, unsure what a command prompt is. I'm on a Mac.

Sorry, assumed a Windows box. You can find PING and NSLOOKUP on your Mac if you open Applications | Utilities and run Network Utilities. You will find PING and LOOKUP there.

I suspect the router is configured to use Vodafone DNS servers instead of BigPipe so resolving domain names is failing.

The issue with the HG556a Vodafone modem that causes problems when used with other providers is they'll redirect all DNS requests to themselves when configured using the login information on the back of them (vodafone/vodafone). Whether this is the case or not when connected to Vodafone, I am unsure but doubt it.

You need to log in with advanced/advanced and configure the modem in order for it to perform DNS queries properly, as described in the guide in the thread linked by DarkShadow: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxLLClTIvbU5ZjAzWGpjZ3VqREU/edit

There are other potential issues that could be causing your connection not to work. It'd be best to talk with support about it, as they can see what is happening with your line, whereas people here cannot. If Bigpipe are telling you they cannot see your line as being up and running, but your modem is reporting that it has DSL sync, then it is likely that Chorus have not connected the correct cable pair when installing your line. Again, you'll need to contact Bigpipe support to resolve this.

Either way you should replace the router, The 556a's have their web interface open to the public on the WAN with the username & password set as support which you cannot change.

Right so results of ping are 10 packets received, 10 transmitted. 0% traffic loss.
Lookup result just comes back with 192.168.1.1

In reference to setting up modem using advanced settings, I've tried doing that several times (big pipe sent instructions on how to ) but it stalls at the step where you have to edit the wan settings, it just won't let me do it.

Also, doing this typing and dealing with big pipe on phone email, so excuse any typos!

It seems the modem is pinging itself and resolving domains to its own IP instead of the public?

it sounds like either you're doing it wrong, or your modem is just broken.
I've set that VF modem up on BP for a friend, and the instructions Darkshadow posted a link to are spot on.

At the risk of asking stupid questions, are you trying to use that modem for ADSL or VDSL with Bigpipe?  It's ADSL only. It won't work on VDSL.

Assuming it's ADSL you are trying to do, then just in case you've accidentally screwed with any other settings when tying to set it up,  do a factory reset first (pin in the little hole) , then try the Bigpipe settings
