Hey all i've noticed that the global-gateway has been having 97% packet loss on

mdr-ip24-int.msc.global-gateway.net.nz

so some websites do not load or become slow can Spark sort this out has anyone else had this issue?

I'm seeing very slow access to many services on my Spark VDSL service.

It seems to be a problem with DNS because when I change the DNS to someone other than Spark, suddenly everything works.

If I use my mobile phone as a wifi hotspot, instead of my VDSL, everything works just fine. Combined with an alternet DNS (on VDSL) also seeming to work OK.....it leaves me wondering what's going on their network that parts(mobile) work great - including DNS - and other parts (VDSL) are terrible (especially DNS).

The Global Gateway routers don't prioritise ping traffic so you'll always see packet loss here.

Are you using WiFi or Ethernet?

How were you determining that packet loss was occurring at this? Where you using WinMTR? If so was packet loss occurring past this point as well?

A single router dropping packets means nothing as typically core routers will deprioritise ICMP traffic so stop them being flooded in a DDOS, and may people don't actually understand what WinMTR stats are actually showing.

This has been mentioned quite a few times before but packet loss at that spot in the network is not necessarily an indicator of anything wrong. I haven't actually checked in (It's the weekend and I'm not operational staff) but if access to links on the far side of it don't exhibit very similar packet loss profiles, then it's an artefact you can not be concerned by.

Cheers - N

Back in July you were asking us about new isp stuff. Any update on that?

I assume you haven't launched it yet since you are on a spark connection.

for me, Spark international traffic is pretty much a coin toss at certain times. usually some time at night. around the time the OP posted, but usually more than just that 1 hr period.

for some reason even GZ is hopeless during those phenomena ... is GZ hosted internationally?

umm acutally i might have to take that back - usually a modem reset fixes it. i have a coin toss type of modem in the form of a HG659 ... but sometimes a reset doesn't fix it ... sorry i have to packet traces to prove anything

GZ has some content hosted from Cloudflare, who now peer at APE. However as Spark don't peer at APE for the majority of their customers (they do for one that I know of) so you'll have to get that content from the next Cloudflare node which I believe is in Sydney.

Indeed, yes still on the cards, we had some conflicts of interest with the people we were working with however back onboard and hopefully will make an announcement in the next few months all going smoothly.
