Hi, in an attempt to increase my wireless coverage at home I have installed two commercial grade wireless AP's however the latency between my end device and the modem when there is any sort of throughput sky rockets to around 3k. It has been suggested to me by the provider of these that this is due to the standard VDSL modem (Thomson) Spark provided upon VDSL install.

Are there any suggestions of alternate 3rd Party modems that people have found better performance then the Thomson or Huawai modems Spark provides?

Are you sure your modem isnt simply delaying ICMP packets? have you checked you dont have interference causing your wireless packets to be delayed?

Assuming the wireless APs are setup to simply act as an AP and leave all the work to your modem, it shouldnt make much differance to latency at all apart from your own distance from the AP and interference being the contributing factor.

As a test, have you tried testing latency to a device hardwired to your VDSL modem? do you see the same loss of latency to there?

I wonder if a different wireless channel would make any difference?

Hi, appreciate the replies to troubleshoot the wireless however I would like to focus on suggestions of alternate VDSL modems rather then on the wireless aspect of this issue. I want to prove out this part of the network as I have already tried basic wireless troubleshooting.

i have had 0 issues with the supplied modem.

i get 1ms from my laptop connected via wifi to my desktop connected via ethernet to spark provided tg589

i know you want to look new modems but why not see if there is an easy solution as opposed to spending money

would you care to provide more details, like what access points you are using? how are they connected to the modem

when you say 3k is that 3000ms?

sounds like the "provider" is just trying to shift blame and not actually attempt any diagnostics.

for all you know you could buy a new modem and still have the same issue

Okay, I use an Netcomm NF4V. The first one I got was replaced, and the replacement has been working fine since I got it.

One question I have is why the big box stores have so little to offer if you're looking to replace a VDSL modem/router? Noel Leeming is selling the D-Link DSL-2877AL dual band AC750 for around $250 (although I know people on GZ don't think highly of D-Link), and there are plenty of specialty online-only stores (Alpha City, PB Tech, etc.) with VDSL devices available, but if you go into most physical retailers you won't find a thing. Plenty of ASDL, some fibre, no VDSL. Is the market that small?

Latency increases to the router across wireless almost certainty point to wireless saturation and not the router. What sort of throughput are you talking about?

If you saturate regular 802.11 WiFi you will see massive latency increases, the exception to this is when you're running proprietary TDMA protocols such as AirMax.
