Hi, My ONT Installation is scheduled on the 16th, and i wish to get a modem as soon as possible. i will be on UFB starter pack. Bigpipe recommended me ASUS RT-AC52U modem, but i also stumble upon a few

1: DLINK DSL-2750B, which claims to support NBN/UFB

2: DLINK DSL-2870B, also claim to support NBN/UFB

i am still unsure whether i really need to go with $140++ router to work with UFB? My setup is fairly simple, just a desktop and a wifi for my wife will do.

Any other recommendation? Hope to know. thanks

Mikrotik RB951G-2HnD + my setup guide here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=161676 - this will get you a very good router.

Might be able to /just/ fit it into that price bracket: http://www.gowifi.co.nz/coming-soon-new-products/mikrotik-rb951g-2hnd-high-power-802.11n-gigabit-wireless-router.html?keyword=rb951g

Just a note, there's no VLAN tagging requirement on new Bigpipe UFB connections now, so you don't need to set up that part.

Any other recommendation for the router? Will go to pbtech or harvey to get one soon.

PB Tech will probably have a wider range of routers to choose from, they are a specialist in PC hardware afterall.

Thanks for the advice. Will go have a look. Still not sure if those claimed nbn/ufb support dlink will actually work.

The only reason for tagging is if they want to provide voice as well, which means you would use their router to get the voip port.

Its time the other ISPs moved to supporting untagged on other equipment since the voip is hardly an essential to have.

It's not just voice - it's for the CIR as a whole. Voice may be the main use of the CIR, but it doesn't mean it's the only use. Without VLAN tagging you have no CIR.

Pfft CIR... The whole Internet is best efforts. Anyone who expects any different is dreaming.

Are there any decent cheapish routers which support tagging for the QoS (802.1p IIRC?)

I'm currently using a router flashed with TomatoUSB which doesn't seem to support it.

Edgerouter Lite or Mikrotik are 2 that come to mind.
