I would have posted on the original thread but it is locked since no one posted in 30 days. To me that kinda defeats the point of a forum. But anyway... This topic was about DSL-G604T dropping the connection. I do not use the modem/router wirelessly but i was having issues with it dropping the connection on my machines, this would happen to me about once every hour or so and was a real pain in the but - BTW i am not on the completely screwed Go Large plan, so it is not that causing the problem as said in the other thread. I went to the d-link site and went to troubleshooting for this router. They advised to set your ip address manually in your network connection rather then have it obtain the address automatically.

Basically right click your network connection and go properties.
Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
You will be presenting with this screen:

Now put the dot in the radio box that says: Use the following IP address.

Set your ip address manually (note mine is setup for use in NZ i dunno about the auzzies :))
Note: the DNS entries i have are for Xtra.

I know this is a relativly simple thing to do but it fixed my issue i have not had any drops for about 10 days now.
It was not posted in the other thread so i thought id post it here as it may help others who were affected.

Cheers.

Its designed to drop thread digging. In most cases, threads get bumped to that are old with posts that are not related.

The most useful posts typically posted within 30 days of the last post. However, as Ross stated - we can unlock threads on request.

Anyway, back on topic.

Thanks for this post - I have had numerous issues with my D-Link adsl/router dropping the internet, so much that I insisted it be replaced by Xtra.  New one has the same issues, including dropping the lan connection between my 360 and PC.

Will try this and post back with results.

Cheers, Jason.

As promised, here are my reults from trying the above.

This has made a huge improvement to every aspect of my internet access.  Not only has my router stopped dropping me off (and saved me from the "Honey, why is the interent not working on my laptop?" question every 20 minutes), but I can suddenly use my p2p sowftware which I had all but given up on.

I have no idea why this has worked so well, and would be interested in someone with some technical nouse explaining it...

Anyway, a sincere 'thank you' eathemeek for improving my internet experience and saving my marriage.

Cheers, Jason.

Yea i dunno why it worked so well either; seems to be that when we allow that router to autoconfig DHCP it likes to give it a new ip address every 20 mins or so haha cutting off the connection. The reason i thought this is because one day i went to access a share and the IP address for my computer had changed by itself, it kinda makes sense too.. as what we are doing is giving it a static IP so it wont change.. Really strange eh.. glad i could help though; a really easy fix i hope it continues to work well for you.

You could try checking the DHCP lease period configuration in your router. When the IP address lease expires, the host is forced to ask the router to renew the lease. However, the router should then issue the same address again, not a new one, so maybe your router is bung?

Yes I did check the lease setting and it was at 3600 seconds.  I changed this to the maximum number of 9s I could fit in the field, but am unsure of the effect as I changed the above settings at the same time.  I'll do it a little more scientifically (change one parameter at a time) sometime, but right now I am just happy that it works...

My ADSL light constantly turns off so I'm trying this. If this works, I will love you forever and ever <3
