Hi all,

just want to know if i can ask for a better VDSL profile?

roadside cabinet is just about 100m from my house and my vdsl line status is not bad at all.

At the moment i think i'm on 8b with 497779 kbit/s downstream.

No

its all done automatically by a system called DLM and there is no human input to this.

your attenuation is to high to get much more speed than you are currently getting

What do you mean by better? Lower latency, higher throughput, or more stable?

You can ask, but you won't get. DLM will sort out the best profile, balancing the above.

Seems gz is eating my replies today.

As above, your just over that line. So 17a is unlikely.

Your best bet is to not touch a thing. avoid reboots, resyncs etc and hope for the best.

Your isp in no way can influence what profile you have.

can be anything

i had 17b for about 8 months with a 6.4dB attenuation. that was a speed of about 55-64mbps

then one day i was down to 52, and now down to 49 with the same attenuation.

so in the 18 months ive had VDSL ive lost about 15mbps

i dont mind though i know its a best effort service and i know it can drop at its on whim.

at the end of the day its better than ADSL and until i can get fiber it will have to do

There's a misconception that DLM only operates for 10 days. This is not the case. It is just far more aggressive initially, making more frequent changes. It continues to dynamically monitor the line (!) but given it should now be on or close to the best profile, any changes will be far less frequent.

To Quote someone from Chorus (15th jan 2014 so do be aware it may have changed slightly now)

BMarquis:

We have a number of conditions that must be met for your line to be switched to a 17a Spectrum profile.
If your line is on the 17a spectrum profile, but the spectrum between 8Mhz and 17Mhz is not being used, I'd be looking at your CPE.  it shouldn't report 17a unless the DSLAM is providing that, and we run 8b and 17a on independant profiles.

As for the question of 'what allows a line to be on 17a':

  • The current bandplan is 8b (goes without saying!)
  • The line is shorter than 350 meters, which is an electrical length in the 5530 Network Analyser of <7dB
  • DLM is in operation on that line
  • A Bandplan switch hasn't occured in the last 90 days (to stop bouncing between 8b+17a, while still allowing re-evaluation as/when required)

Hopefully this helps answer some questions?

Exactly this. DLM Always runs.

the 10 day period it polls IIRC every minute rather than day.

DO NOT TOUCH IT OR CHANGE ANYTHING, DONT WHINGE OR ASK FOR A PORT RESET. LEAVE IT BE.

And to add to that, be sure to leave your modem on all the time. Don't turn it off at night (like a lot of people do... which surprises me) as that impacts how DLM works.

Lastly, your line speed can and will go down the more people who are on VDSL around you on the same cable bundle. So.... The more popular VDSL gets the more likely the overall speeds will go down.

But as someone on 14mb ADSL... My thoughts are 60mb to 50mb... 1st world problems.

If you know someone at chorus they can force the profile.
