Don't believe that you can directly connect to the ONT in the house. Had mine installed yesterday and the installer thought it could act as a switch but doesn't seem to.

??? You can connect your own routing device directly to ONT, issue is the vlan tagging which apple probably doesn't do.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

No, I mean to use the ONT as a switch doesn't seem to work.

Why would it when it aint a switch.

Because the installer thought it could and even plugged another network port so thought things might have changed.

You'd have thought an installer should know better!
The multiple ports on an ONT are if you are buying multiple services.  E.g. you could have on port with a Spark broadband connection, and another port for an Orcon broadband connection if you wanted.
That assumes that there is both support for that from both the ISP and the Local Fibre Company - neither of which is guaranteed.

My views are my own, and may not necessarily represent those of my employer.

I would stick with the two boxes.

I set my Timecapsule to bridge mode (so Huawai acts as the router) and ran a cat 5/6 cable to another room (my lounge) giving me a second WiFi point and local wired ports for TV, Tivo, Blu-ray. With such a setup, you get two locations for wired connections and two WiFi points for better coverage - its a big house. I set the two boxes to different fixed channels on the 2.5GHz band. Only downside is coverage overlaps in some places so have to select nearest AP for fastest speed.

Only one of the ports on the ONT are active per provider - only one provider only the first port

No current Apple devices can be used as a router on UFB when VLAN tagging is required. Apple aren't yet smart enough to realise VLAN tagging is pretty much the standard for metro fibre deployments globally so don't include that functionality. If you want to use Apple kit you'll need to move to an ISP that offers an untagged UNI port (which there are pros and cons to) or use a switch or device such as a Mikrotik to tag the traffic, of which there are many posts on here (including a blog post I wrote) detailing how to do this.

What are the cons to having an untagged UNI port?

You can't use the CBR guaranteed bandwidth.

You have no CIR component on your connection. It's explained in detail on my blog post about this if you search for it.
