Hi everyone,

Fibre has recently been installed in my neighborhood and i will be looking to switch from adsl to fibre in the near future.
Currently im a Spark adsl and homeline customer and have had no problems over the years.
After looking through whats being offered by isps for unlimited 100mbs fibre and phoneline, the price averages around $109 per month. Spark however, charges $139 per month.
Is there reason why Spark costs approx $30 extra per month?
I was hoping to stick with them for fibre but i dont think its worth the extra $360 per year.
Unless i have missed something and that pricing is incorrect and/or bundled with extras?

Thanks

nope

spark are just very slow to react when it comes to pricing changes by their competitors. they are also slow to react when it come to some technologies, like VOIP which others have had for years.

I believe that Spark intends to build a "pure" VoIP system instead of just piggybacking on the copper system. This is apparently a huge undertaking.

Spark has some advantages like free Anti-Virus for computers you run and Helpdesk.
I am personally waiting for my Fibre to be active (Apr-2014 it says on Chrous) and would consider moving to Bigpipe (also a spark company) from spark just for the speed they are offering (200/200).

They have. It's called running voice over copper delivering the most reliable phone service in NZ.

Replacing the NEAX's is going to be a massive undertaking over the next few years that's got the potential to possibly require anything up to $1 billion in investment - all while nobody wants to pay for voice any longer.

Telecom / Spark have already spent several hundred million on VoIP that's all gone nowhere due to the scale of what is required.

It's probably not quite right to say our investment has gone nowhere, but the sentiment is spot in :). Reality is we have to build pretty much the biggest VoIP system in the country, and we have to get it right pretty much first time. Personally, i had a VoIP line through another provider for a while and it was the worst thing ever. Spark has more customers who expect more, so we can't do a half job on it.

That all said, OP, we'll have news pretty soon on Voice over Fibre :)
