Is it standard procedure or not for Chorus to install CAT5 or better when doing the installation/set up?
When mine was done the technician tried to do the rewiring but found he was too heavy for the ceiling beams. He asked headquarters if they could send out someone lighter but they said no and to make do with the existing wiring. Was this acceptable practice?
Snap's website says "A Chorus technician will install a dedicated VDSL compatible splitter at the premise demarcation (the point where services enter the building) and a new data grade cable to the selected DSL jack point within the premises."
Does Spark have a different agreement? Each time I query this I get a different answer from Spark from "I understand that the service that chorus has given does sound poor and should be rectified"(their exact words from an email), the woman on phone support basically had no idea about anything, to "Cat 5 is on the discretion of the tech. as far as i am aware"(also from an email).

Can anyone clarify this?

I'm sure that a new cat5 or equivalent leadin from the ETP to where the dedicated RJ45 is required.

I would call the broadband help desk back up and say Chorus didn't do their job properly.

im pretty sure its fine to use existing wiring if its not possible to run cat5 for the jack point. as long as its only data going over it.

Its highly unlikely to make much if any of a difference using the existing phone wiring to new cat5 cable

I never did get straight answer from Spark about this. Either nobody that I contacted in support actually knows what their standard VDSL installation involves or they won't say if it going to cost them money.
I haven't needed/used their "support" much until recently and apart from Tony, who fixed some issues on their end that were affecting me, it is becoming an exercise in frustration.

it is standard with a new VDSL connection, and doesnt cost extra, it costs the ISP though and its factored in to your contract price of your connection

it includes a master filter/splitter connected before all the house wiring for the phone jacks, then a dedicated jack point for the VDSL modem to use. They will try to run new cat5 cable for this if its possible, but sometimes it isnt so they will reuse the old phone wiring but it will be serprated from everything else.

i dont know if the call center people will know what a VDSL install entails becuase its not spark who do them, its chorus.

The Chorus technician(nice guy) said he was too heavy for my ceiling. He contacted HQ but was told they wouldn't send out anyone lighter. It was possible to rewire, they just chose not to. I assumed this was ok at the time but even Spark has said this was unacceptable but try and get them to do anything about it and you get nowhere.
I'm considering switching to Snap(waiting to see if there will be new plans or if 2degrees mess things up) and have them set things up properly. It may not make any difference but fibre could be a long way off so I want the best VDSL until it does. It's starting to feel like Spark isn't interested in keeping their customers happy or retaining them.

do you have a master filter and a dedicated VDSL jackpoint? if so i dont know what your issue is

if they cant run a new cable for the VDSL jack point they are able to use one of the old cables, its not going to make much if any difference to the speed you get because it only has vdsl signals going through it not the phone signals

New wiring may not make any difference but the existing wiring has a burglar alarm(not longer monitored) attached and splits into 3 jackpoints(VDSL at second one).
If I paid for an installation that is supposed to include new wiring I do expect to get what I paid for.
I don't know if it is a coincidence but I got a response from Spark after this morning's post saying " telpermit and chorus ('telecom whole sale') standards dictate that indeed a dedicated / new wire should be run. "

its suppose to include new wiring IF IT IS POSSIBLE, in your case it wasnt as the tech could have damaged your roof

you still havent answered if you have a Master filter/splitter

Sorry missed that, he did install the master filter. Nothing wrong with my ceiling strength, he was just a solid guy. He was good and wanted the rewiring completed by someone lighter so he rung whoever was in charge and they just said no.

does your VDSL work? do you have any issues with dicsonnecting? or slow speeds?

i honestly do not see what your issue is, you have a dedicated VDSL jack point, you have a master filter/splitter. your line is working fine changing the cable is going to do little for your connection.

they probably wont send anyone else out because its gone above the standard cost for an install. sending an extra tech is going to cost an extra hour in labour and travel costs.

no where does it say they will install new cable from the splitter, it says rewire, which could mean using the existing cabling in the house.

you just lucked out and got a solid technician

Yes my VDSL does work but my speed dropped dramatically. It is probably still a good speed but about 2/3 of what I enjoyed for a long time.

I'm not sure why you're so argumentative when even Spark is now saying it was an unacceptable installation.

You wrote "IF IT IS POSSIBLE" to "shout" your point. The electrician working in the ceiling space wiring a new powerpoint last week obviously thought it was.

It's the weekend...relax :)

Do keep in mind that if existing CAT5 or better, or equivalent wiring already exists (2 pair homeLAN internal wiring is suitable), that the technician can use that instead of running a new cable. You may have already had suitable internal wiring. With that said it can't hurt to get it done, have you tried contacting the service company themselves to query it?

im shouting the point because you seem to be missing the point. they dont have to run new cabling, some houses its not possible, yes spark may think they should have but they dont do the wiring do they chours or their contractor do.

if you are in ayckland or waikato get coffee barron in to look at your internal wiring. but if you know vdsl you will know there are many things that can effect the speed you get. if everything is up to spec what do you want your RSP to do?

Spark sent an email that I mentioned earlier today saying "telpermit and chorus ('telecom whole sale') standards dictate that indeed a dedicated / new wire should be run. "

Obviously your interpretation of their statement is different to mine.

Well my understanding comes from working as an installer amongst other things for a service company
