I live in an apartment. There's one (pair) of fibre going into one fibre converter box thing.
Does that mean all 50 apartments (if they decide to sign up) will share the same bandwidth? :(
can they multiplex like 50 streams down one fibre connection? lol

no

if you get your own connection 100/100 or 200/200 or what ever you will get that.

The main fibres into the building will be rated way higher than what you can get on your home connection and no everyone in the building will choose to get fibre either

ok, I don't get how that's done technically :P
so how can they tailor/provision everyone to their own chosen speed dimensions through one piece of hardware?

because they can split the fibre for each appartment

each appartment will get an ONT

You should probably just be glad the building has already got a connection, MDU can take a while otherwise.

don't count on it - more than 2 months with the ducting in common area done and still waiting for service

Gpon. While its a sorta-shared bandwidth (upstream from all users is shared using single wavelength split into time, downstream each user has own wavelength), it's been provisioned in such a way that it is not congested at this level (so far).
Congestion can occur in other places tho.

Generally apartments have an apartment build stage where a Cabinet gets installed (probably in basement), and fibre break-out boxes per level.

Later when ask to be connected an installer will build out from the break-out box on your level through to inside your room and install an ONT. Half a days work if all goes well.

Just a quick caution:

Not all Fibre is UFB fibre

Some buildings (such as empire in Auckland city) have business grade fiber, which the building management resell to residents via a local network of some sort.

Generally these connections are inferior / more expensive than a normal UFB/xDSL connection, but can be fast and convenient to set up for shorter term tenants . Sometimes this is the only option for data (other than wireless) for these buildings.

Hopefully you have access too normal UFB
