i have my broadband and toll calls with orcon, and they charge $0.15 per min when i dial a local 09 number with my landline.

i obtained the 09-909xxxx number from www.jaxtr.com.  apparently, jaxtr convert the international mobile number which i need to call to a local number.  if it works, i will save heaps!

is there another provider who does not charge for calling such 09 numbers?

thanks.

ps: calling the number without the prefix 09 doesn't work.

I assume you are in the Auckland Local Calling Area?

The 09 909xxxx number range is allocated to TelstraClear and is in the Auckland LCA so this should be a free local call if you're calling from a residential number that is also in the Auckland LCA.

Have you approached Orcon about this? I'm guessing the number has possibly been set up incorrectly in their routing tables as according to the NAD it was only allocated in August this year.

Are you sure its a local call? Just because it is an 09 number does necessarily mean its local. Sounds like its in a different local calling area hence why you need to dial the 09 and you get charged for the call.

yes, i am at howick, auckland.

it is in the T&C of orcon that if i dial an area code including 09 before a tel number, i will be charge accordingly. :(

i assume that the number 09-909xxxx given by www.jaxtr.com is a local number since auckland is designated with 09 area code.

Everywhere from Auckland right up to Cape Reinga will have an 09 area code, so just because the prefix is 09 doesnt necessarily mean its a local Auckland number, but from what Steve is saying it should be a local call. Try calling it from a line thats billed by Telecom and see how you get on.

Just because a number is in the same area code doesn't mean it's in the same LCA (local calling area). If you have a look at the NAD site you'll find this list which details every area code and number range in the country along with the LCA that it belongs to. If a number you're calling is within the same LCA then it's a local call, if it's not it is a toll call.

The number you're trying to call is in the Auckland LCA, the fact you're unable to dial it suggests a routing issue somewhere. I'm picking the issue is within Orcon's systems since it's not registering that number range without the 09 prefix.

s - I think there might be some slight confusion over how jaxtr works.

Anyone can use jaxtr, regardless of if they joined jaxtr or not, to call a jaxtr user.  Assuming you are the jaxtr user, that means people can call you for the price of a local phone call.  They click on your call me widget... jaxtr gives them a number that is local to their location... and they now have a number they can use in the future to contact you regardless.  We try our best to ensure the number provided to the caller is within their LCA.  We have LCA numbers in about 50 countries and 200+ metropolitan areas, but depending on the caller's area, there may not exactly match.  In thoses case, we provide the next best number from our pool.  So if you have lots of friends in the US, or basically outside of your area-code, jaxtr is a great way for people to call each other.
