A word of warning.

I was running DDWRT on a WNR3500Lv1 device - used not just as a wireless router but had a VPN running as well.

Throughtput on the WAN side during a wired speed test on an intel NUC was 80mbit/s up and down.
Queried with bigPipe who said i was on the elite plan as requested.

Some digging around online showed that DDWRT doesn't deliver the full bandwidth passed about 100-150Mbit/s

Reflashed stock Netgear firmware and speed test re-done shows the full 200Mbit/s

anyone else experienced that?

I can't see that happening. We used to be able to buy ADSL, "as fast as your line allows", now we can buy fibre plans based on speed. Even with the growing proliferation of SVOD, fibre has a lot of bandwidth, and most if not all the local options will have a local CDN, so I'd suggest that the congestion effect with fibre and a lot of video streamers now is less than back in the day with the then lower speed broadband

This is often to do with either drivers the firmware is using, or more likely not having FastNAT enabled in the firmware, which is sometimes an option. I use tomato though, not ddwrt.
