Hi

last week Dad got a call from spark rep.. (sounded asian not kiwi)

they said they send a tech at 11am today to look at house setup
and how can install before deciding since the house is new and has
UTP and patch panel built in.

12:30pm no call no email or show of alleged tech LOL

anyhow.. Im just wondering as telecoms modems/router is basic

does the new digital phones act like any other network device and connect to one of the 4 lan ports on the back and connect to a phone server on a port?

or is there a special UNIT that connects to the fiber end unit that has 4 ports on it as well.

and how many phones do they supply as I doubt can keep using the old phones
unless theres an adapter to allow analogue radio phones to connect to digital phone base?

Your existing phone wiring will be connected to the "POTS1" port on the ONT and your existing phones will continue to work. I don't believe that there are any practical limits on number of devices.

sadly the ONT (fibre end unit) was installed in the wrong place. should of been in the patch/fuse room

but installed behind the TV in lounge.. so at the moment we have it using a line in the wall to send
to patch room which redirects to the router in the computer room and some cables
go back from there to patch panel and farmed out to rest of house.
for devices not using WiFI

however theres a spare UTP wall port being used for SKY phone so I guess that would go
and connect to the unit of the pos1 then and then could send something from pos1 back in wall to patch panel and link it to all phones from that point then.

where would cable tv go of router or ONT?

when PHONE rep was asked this they had no clue what meant why they told dad they were sending someone.. for FREE?

no one has shown today and lets hope it is free LOL

Surely the sensible arrangement is to put the router adjacent to the ONT, then use the installed UTP cabling to connect the router LAN port to the switch in your wiring cabinet for onward distribution around the house.  Any spare LAN ports on the router can be used for TV and associated devices.

For the phone, if you have a phone socket near the TV (eg for sky), you can connect the phone port of the router/ONT (depending on the ISP as to which one) to this socket, and that will connect the VOIP phone services to all the other phone sockets in your house

the phones all patched of the panel.. the street line came in there from road and split out
until fibre came along

router behind the tv is just stupid... its best in study room where it has more utp wall ports
and a better UPS power.

behind tv has 2 panel wall ports..

its simple pos1 to one wall port to panel and lan port to panel which it is at moment and farmed out

just would be wise if they asked where the street cable should of gone in the first place they put it at side of house
rather the main road and should of sent it towards the garage where the panel room is.

telecom/sky dont offer cable tv (sky is of dish at moment) just wondering if that comes of
ONT or router

panel room just has patch leads no switches in there.

the study has 2 switches and the router. UPS and about 10 utp wall ports

so connects back to panel from there and then connects a line to various rooms from those
switches via the panel.

each room has only 2 wall ports.. being 1 for phone and 1 for lan if needed.

I think the basic problem is that your network requirements/design are quite unusual compared to most houses.  For most consumers, the TV is a good place for the router because that is where the demanding bandwidth uses are, and also the best place for the integrated WAP.
It seems strange to have a wiring cabinet but to have your network devices elsewhere - I would have thought the best place for the switch is in the cabinet, next to the patch panel?
No offence, but I find you very difficult to understand and I wonder if that is part of the problem you're experiencing also

well I didnt design it.. so called cpit experts. and yes I would of had ups and switches all in panel room

its was pre fiber know how.. asdl know how..

the idea was to split phones from panel to rooms and one line with filter to send to study room
where the router was. and connect from router and send some ports back in wall to other locations
the jump leads in panel does that.

its not so hard to understand.

in study  has media servers and desktops and switches usp .. on table..  so everywhere is 1gig
not 100mbit like you used to get of back modem/asdl/routers only

now fibre/wan routers are all gig ports.

sure we could have router in lounge and rewire everything.. (prob a bigger job)

at this stage we dont use lan on tv... it works just fine with wifi from media servers
but most of the time its connect to the mysky which is dish at this stage

in fact we have another router (which is acting as a switch with wireless) with wifi in kitchen as microwaves kill signal

I don't think you need to rewire anything.  This is how you could do it:
 - router goes behind TV connected to ONT
 - one UTP from behind TV to patch room for router LAN, the other for router/ONT POTS
 - gigabit switch of required capacity goes in cabinet, connected to router and to other rooms including study
 - you could put a UPS in the patch room for your switch but how reliable is your power?
 - if necessary, you could put a further gigabit switch in the study
 - connect TV to LAN port of router so you're not using wifi bandwidth for streaming

yes its all simple if the analogue phones connect to the pos1.. just send the line to the wall (2nd port)
to the panel and change the lead from the street copper to the incoming pos1 line where it splits to all the house phones. (unless the info is incorrect about using existing phones of course)

the study has 2 x gig switches with 8 to 10 ports already :)

I got it :)

at some stage the router could move if need it with cable sky unless that too connects
of the ont as I dont know.

but lan side dont need to change at this stage.. but the line from ont to panel then to router could be made to the study switches that farm the wan out instead..

I know its simple. just a couple of changes.. but again until need 1gig to tv for ondemand stream (we dont as use mysky and media server streams any size movie/tv show fine when needed)

power out this way is bad.. many spikes and dips and somethings long outages
but its got better since the quakes and other snow disasters.. silly people with
big tree near street power lines

remember its not the LAN we worried about thats all working and setup just fine

it was how to setup the house phones on fiber vs existing copper setup we had.

but as I said above think have it sorted in mind what will happen

it would help if there was a diagram for typical phone setup with the back of ONT etc

but couldnt find anything or info regarding what phones can be connected and extra devices can use

What's involved with moving an already installed ONT? It should be installed in the wiring cabinet if there is one!

i know but it didnt happen.. they didnt ask or check with home owners at all here

and they didnt want to add a fiber join and pipe in rafters to the closet

its ok being behind tv

Im wondering is pos2 also available.. as will need one connection to mysky and another to
go to the 2nd wall port..
