Hi all,

Just asking a question for my brother in Auckland. He has recently signed up for the $119.00 Fibre plan (200MBit) Currently getting around 75Mbit from the new spark test server. So my question is what sort of time frame does it take for a line to settle in before a true indication is available.

He is situated probably 600-700 mtrs from the cabinet down the street so distance shouldn't be an issue for him.

Is he testing over Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

Distance from a cabinet is irrelevant with a fibre connection.

What sort of PC? Is the test performed on multiple PCs or just one?

There is no 'settling' down time for a fibre connection

It is what it is from day one

BUT

there are many factors that may effect what speed is actualy obtained, here are but a few.

- The providers end: Wrong settings on profile, Correct settings on profile but wrong settings requested of the network operator.

- Network operator side: as above , Correct settings requested but wrong settings loaded.

- End Customers End: Hardwired vs Wireless connection (already answered), Poor or faulty performing hardware eg Router, Network Interface Card (NIC) , even the PC itself.

Once a basic check of Hardwired/another PC is used to test the connection and its still slower that expected then generaly the next step is to contact the provider for settings check.

Just ensuring he is actually connection actually at 1gbps? Have you guys seen those al-cheapo cables with only 4 connectors in them?! Could also be his router.

Thanks for the replies appreciate your input. The house has been wired with Cat 6 cable by an installer prior to Fibre going in. Previously on VDSL and I'm pretty sure from testing previously the connection was very good. The PC in question is a mid to high end system (Not using onboard NIC) and the Router is a Spark supplied unit.

There are other PC's in the house but the testing was done late at night with very little activity from other users. At a later point if things didn't improve we'll do an isolating test to id any other factors effecting the speed. Personally I don't think the issue is related to anything within the house or the wiring though.

Will recheck settings are correct with the profile again with Spark ..... Seems a shame to have a 200MBit connection and getting less than half of what it is capable of.

Where abouts is the Spark server located - in Auckland or somewhere else in New Zealand? regarding the router, is it the hg630b or the hg659b?

Hi there my brother has the HG630b model . The LAN ports are all yellow. So not a good choice then for 200Mbit plan I guess.

Also found out the NIC maybe 10/100 so looking at changing that to a giga card.

Any ideas on new giga router please.

We tested with Auckland Server

if he signed up to a 200mbit plan he should have got the HG659b not the HG630, as the 630 cant manage 200mbit

call spark and have them send out the correct modem for his plan

Thanks to all for the info and suggestions, your assistance is greatly appreciated. My brother is now trying to contact spark for a replacement. I believe he is going to try again on Monday as he spent hours on the phone and couldn't get thru.

Don't suppose there is another way to short track this process? I suggested boxing up the old one and returning to a shop but they say they can't help either.

Not very good customer relations I would say considering they sent the wrong Router in the first place.

Will update the post when we get it sorted. Thanks again.

Use online chat and talk with those guys. Should have it sorted out quickly. Otherwise the broadband faults people should be able to help. Just ring in the morning not 8pm on a Saturday night.

Monday morning early did the trick. Anyway Spark are sending out the new modem. I've recommended to have the data cat 6 cable fixed up as well by a local installer as there is a vdsl data connection on the wall and multiple phone lines within the house that are no longer needed.

Once that is sorted and some new cat 6 cable with new giga nic's we'll re-run the tests and update you all on the progress.

Well new Router is installed .... data cabling fixed up now reaching 202 Mbit I believe. Crikey I'm on an ADSL2 plan in Aussie and lucky if I can get 19Mbit about 1 k from the exchange. Anyway thanks to all for your assistance.
