Moved to BigPipe a few weeks ago, and the connection speed is still quite slow, although no worse than when we were with Spark. We're on the Fast ADSL plan (5 - 20 Mbps), but speeds are maxing out at about 400 KB/s (~3.2 Mbps), which isn't much greater than the 3 Mbps limit of the Basic ADSL plan, which is $10 cheaper. I think we're actually quite close to the local cabinet (there's a green box outside a couple of houses away), so is it possible that these speeds could be improved, or will I have to wait for UFB?
Thanks for the reply. Last year, we tried to upgrade to VDSL (ended up not being able to because we were slightly too far from the exchange or something), but I believe the Chorus technician installed a master filter — he put a new outlet labelled "DSL" on the wall, and that's what we're using now. Would this have solved any wiring issues, or might there be something else?
based on that attenuation, you should be able to get much better speeds than that.
Plug your address into here https://www.chorus.co.nz/maps and tick the 'broadband' part of the legend (the brown bits) what comes up?
Being just on the edge of VDSL coverage likely means you should be in the 10Mbps+ region. Assuming the master filter was installed correctly last year (it's possible they screwed it up) then it's most likely a fault in the lead-in or in the cabinet, or possibly your modem. What modem are you using, and is it the same modem you used with spark? Are you able to try a different modem out?
Yeah, we're in the >10 Mbps region, slightly outside the >20 Mbps area.
All we've got is a Vodafone/Huawei HG556a modem, which we've been using for a few years. We used Spark's VDSL router (I think it was the Technicolor TG589vn V2) for a few days before they took it back last year, and it did seem to be slightly faster, but I've never seen it higher than 4 Mbps.
