Hi folks

I lived in a house in One Tree Hill, Auckland from January - July 2014. While there I had VDSL with Snap, and they installed a master filter when the connection was done. Looking at my speedtest.net results from then I was able to get 18-35 Mb/s down and ~9 Mb/s up over the time I was living there.

We moved out in July and lived somewhere else for 12 months, and have just returned to the house (rental). This time around I thought I'd see what other ISP's were offering and thought I'd try BigPipe. We just got connected on Friday and the first thing I did was a speedtest, and was surprised to see 6.5/6.5 on the connection. Looking at the modem stats showed that was around what the sync rate was too.

I have a few questions:

* Am I going to be able to get better speeds with another ISP, or are they all the same?
* If they're not the same, what specific differences do they have that affect the speed?
* Are there other neighbourhood factors that could have affected the speeds over the last 12 months to make the connection slower?
* Do I have any other options for diagnosing the speed issues/improving the speed?

have you considered getting the wiring checked? 12 months is long enough for something to be changed, a joint to get loose etc.

Try another modem too, i had an unfortunate issue with a modem somehow dying in the 15 mins it was put into its box, driven to the new house but 5 mins down the road and plugged back in - this had me baffled when i tested another device.

As you were with snap before, i assume your using a fritzbox?

If so, post the spectrum and DSL information, as it will most likely give a more clear indication than assumptions off the limited information you have so far given.

Would be good if you had even a rough figure of old line stats, not speedtest results too.

I'm using a Draytek Vigor 130. Unfortunately I don't have any stats from last time other than a fuzzy recollection of a sync rate of around 20,000 Kb/s.

Here is the information from the router, is this the information you're after?

VDSL2 Information      (VDSL2 Firmware Version:   05-04-08-00-00-06 )   Profile State UP Speed Down Speed SNR Upstream SNR Downstream   8B SHOWTIME 7044 (Kbps) 6516 (Kbps) 11 (0.1dB) 11 (0.1dB)

Just got this email from BigPipe, so I'll wait it out and see how things go:

...
> We're currently in a 10 day wind up period with Chorus. This is semi standard for VDSL connections when Chorus monitor the line to find the best profile for ideal speed/stability on your line. We do apologise for the inconvenience as it's not ideal, but it should get better over the next few days.

Can you post the stats page - in the 130 you'll find it under diagnostics / DSL stats

Nothing will change with a connection that bad.

DLM isn't magical pixies that will fix that connection.

Really need to know your attenuation and see a bitloading graph for diagnosis.

Snap uses Chorus, Bigpipe uses Chorus, almost any ISP you can name will be using Chorus for VDSL. So any sync speed issues you're experiencing won't be caused by your ISP. It's generally caused by a wiring problem.

Did tenants get sky installed whilst you were away? Anything with your internal wiring could have changed.

Here are the stats. What is recommended to generate a bit loading graph on a Draytek?

The person living there in the meantime was the landlord, she didn't even have the phone line connected while she was there. I'll talk to her to check if anything changed. Are there any well electricians people recommend who I should contact to check this out?

So I had nzcoffeebaron come and take a look and he reterminated the splitter, checked it out with other routers, e.t.c. and determined that the problem was at the road. I emailed BigPipe and they got a Chorus tech to come out the next morning (!). He went up to the road and saw that in the connection box (gray plastic post in the ground), someone hadn't used the right connectors. He cut them off and put the right ones on, and lo and behold:

From 29dB attenuation to 14dB. Much better! Thanks to all involved.

Good to see all sorted. I pity the next Chorus tech that has to do any re termination in your ETP. There is no slack left anymore :(
