Hi
This doubt came in my mind.
When Telecom was there, XTRA was part of it.
Since they split into Chorus, Spark and xtra mailis taken over by yahoo, can one be able to keep his/her xtra email id even after leaving the SPARK as his ISP?

I don't believe so, but will leave that for someone else to confirm. What I would recommend is to dump any ISP mail service and get a gmail, outlook, or whatever 3rd party email address. You are then not tied to a specific ISP.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I think if you pay them you can continue to use your old email account but as above you are better off signing up for Gmail or Outlook.com and putting a forwarding in place on your old email address for a while.

People are much better with a generic email service - or their own domain if they feel so inclined. Using an ISP-provided email is a lock in people don't need.

Yes, you can keep it but you have to pay.

Rather than a forwarding rule, I have found an auto-reply with a message saying this is no longer my email address works best. Run it for a couple of months and you should be sweet - you could do longer if you stayed with the ISP for a bit...

If you just want mail, it's closer to $5. Add $30 a year for a domain and it's a far better service than keeping @xtra address.

Or, just use gmail or outlook.com - fine for most people's needs.

Typically your email account is closed a week or so after the last service has been closed off. Some people I know have slipped through the cracks but normally people get shutdown as soon as their account is closed. Or transfer it to a Mobile account if you still have a Spark mobile account.
You can move it to another customer if they have broadband service and don't have an existing Xtra account against their account.
Otherwise it's $20 from memory to keep a dialup account going to keep the xtra account alive.

From memory it is also possible to take your user@xtra.co.nz username and add it to another active username as a sub account. Therefore if you have a friend with an active xtra username, you can close your xtra account but modify/move your username to be an alias connected as a sub user on your friend's account. It still has a unique password and mailbox though, so it is still private and secure.

Unfortunately I can't remember exactly how to do this, however I have done it in the past when my brother closed his xtra account down. Someone at Spark's broadband helpdesk should know. You can also log into xtra webmail and check the help  section for how to set up sub accounts.

If you keep a landline, $10 per month, $20 if no LL/BB.

Sub Account. We can't move a parent account, i.e. me@xtra.co.nz that is currently a base username, or an email account, to be a Sub Account. Understandable, otherwise everyone would do that. If you have a sub account and you cancel it, its gone burger, cannot be reactivated. Once the suspension period has lapsed, I assume thats still 30 days.

Wheelbarrow, I am pretty sure thats not correct. In the early days, circa Aug 18 2007.... it may have been while that project was in transition. Im 99% on that, but happy to be corrected.
Now, maybe it was an alias. Yahoo doesnt do aliases but we migrated them over. An alias can be cancelled, and re used as a Sub Account, I assume as for Yahoo that doesnt do aliases, or aliases as we had them imported, so it had no Yahoo based audit trail, hence it could be removed and set as a sub account.

You are more likely to be correct than I am on this one. I can't remember the exact details now - the exact email address my brother wanted to keep could well have been just an alias.

We changed ISP in January. Old xtra email account is still active and receiving emails.

Unless you close it, it will still work. You'll be being charged for it though - if not now, eventually.
