For anybody reading this there has been an outage of the Telecom Mobile network in the South Island since approximately 1900 this evening. Calls between Telecom Mobiles seem unaffected but all calls either into the network or out of the network (incl 111) and SMS messages are affected.

I received a blank text message from a friend at about 6pm yesterday evening. At first I thought it might have just been a case of too much Christmas cheer, but now I'm wondering if maybe she had tried to send me something and it got lost in translation between Telecom and Vodafone.

Something like that. New SMS messages are always passed to the SMSC*, and they are stored there if they cannot be delivered straight away, such as when there is a network fault, or the phone is off. When the fault is fixed or the phone is turned on, the SMS is delivered.

*SMSC is a server that stores and routes SMS.
