is it because I'm no longer on PPPoA?
this is actually a VDSL2 (Wireless Nation) 'fibre over copper' plan

is port forwarding ignored with this freaky config?

Ive seen a voda HG659 with DMZ not pass all ports through the DMZ, some ports passed through, some didnt . Had to go back to the older
router to make that work.

Perhaps the HG659's are a bit flaky, or perhaps some ports cant be forwarded on that because of Sparks/vodas firmware & backdoors?

Google search that router & port forward , you'll see alot of people having issues.

I have found them hit and miss with port forwarding, good routers otherwise.

I agree both routers that spark offer in my opinion are garbage, I was having the port forwarding issues with the hg630b, talked with spark customer service they sent me the hg659b which is better than the hg630b just for the fact that it has gigabit lan ports. However the hg659b still has the same port forwarding issues and when i contacted spark about their router i was told to contact the manufacture. Im left wondering if anybody had tested these routers to see if the can do what they claim.

These routers are rubbish for port forwarding, they forward using MAC addresses not ip addresses.  I noticed on one used by a customer of mine that some of the MAC addresses listed in the device table didn't correspond to the actual ip address assigned to the particular device, hence ports were being forwarded to the wrong device.  If you're on UFB use a Mikrotik instead, they're far more reliable but just more difficult to set up.
