Spark launched apps for Android Wear and Apple Watch

Spark has released an app for Apple Watch and Android Wear devices that gives people the ability to see information about their Spark plan and track their usage from their wrist, a first for a telco in New Zealand.

The app, which is available now from the App Store and the Google Play store, has been developed as a part of Spark’s Digital First strategic programme. Spark General Manager of Digital First, Anna Curzon says the app’s features are based on how people use Spark’s existing smartphone app.

“We want to make customers’ lives easier, and so all our products are built with this in mind. Through testing our smartphone app we learned many people like to ‘snack’ on information about their accounts, diving in to check how much data they have left, for example, then go back to what they were doing before. A wearable device app makes it easier to do this without interrupting whatever you’re in the middle of on your smartphone,” says Curzon.

With the market for wearables still nascent, Spark’s first foray was developed in just five weeks and is aimed at delivering useful features for customers early, then building more as they give their feedback.

“We’re excited about creating something useful for our customers and bringing it to market quickly, and this process has also been a great example of how Spark is operating – we empower our development teams to be brave, take risks, come up with ideas, then develop and deliver quickly and collaboratively,” says Curzon.

The app is available today and supports Apple Watch OS 1 and 2, and Android Wear OS 4.3 and up.
