I'm trying to get fibre setup, but Spark have no option to deselect the modem as part of the order. The online help people say I need that particular modem that gets bundled with the order (I already have a HG630b) as the tech can't test it on anything else. Apparently after it's tested I can use whatever I like. It seems like bit of e-waste getting the Spark modem when I have two perfectly capable fibre modems already... Surely the tech has a device to test the connection if it's that critical?

It's not a modem, the modem is the Huawei ONT

Each RSP has their own way of configuring to their nternal network. The RSP pre configured router allows the installer to connect that. They cannot install third party routers. They don't know all the UI for every one. And if they installed fiber and walked away as they cannot test, that's no good. They can't take their own router if they have to continually re set up for every customer. Take the supplied router, then when it's up and running and tested, you can do what you like.

Nope. They test using the RSP router.

Sell it on trademe or here

Or choose a different ISP like bigpipe (owned by Spark) that is made for bringing your own router

Yep. If you have issues with your third party setup, or later, you can throw the default one on as an isolation test. If it's all sweet, the issue isn't LFC, RSP or the.physical connection. It's your stuff. it's nice to have a test process handy if your tinkering.
