{Background}

So recently JohnR got me a shiny new number that I can't wait to start using, and ditch the old plagued number I used to use for years.

Well my current place doesn't get great service with Vodafone so I ported the number to Skinny in the meantime, with plans to go back to Vodafone shortly after I move.

I popped this new SIM with the new number into my iPhone 6S and started changing my number over on various things. The following won't activate/can't receive verification texts:

  • Facebook
  • Google
  • WhatsApp
  • iMessage/Facetime
  • Instagram (called after a couple of minutes with no SMS. Able to activate with voice code.)
  • Snapchat (clicked option to receive via call once SMS failed. No phone call came.)
  • Co-Operative Bank (NZ)

I'm able to send and receive SMS/Phone calls to normal NZ numbers which is fine but obviously the above would be nice to have associated with my number if I could.

iMessage is the one I need the most, Apple weren't able to offer any help besides asking their engineering team to look at it sometime over the next 5 to 28 WORKING days. Part of the issue with that seems to be my phone picking up my old 0288 number still, but not sure how.

Unsure if it's related or not, but when I tried to port the number over it failed a couple of times because apparently the system was telling Skinny the number belonged to TelstraClear not Vodafone. So they would put the request though and have it rejected right away, it would only go through in the end after they spoke to someone at Vodafone on the porting team.

{today}

I rang Skinny about this tonight, and mentioned the issue. The second I mentioned iMessage to the CSRs it was instantly Apples issue. Ignoring all the other services that can't text me as well. The last girl I spoke to just before 8pm told me she would restart the systems and everything would work again as normal once I turned my phone off for 5 minutes. Well big shocker, that didn't work.

I've seen posts about sms issues after porting, most of them seemed old from what I could find. Is this a case of just waiting and seeing if my number updates in whatever systems currently point the texts to the SMS rubbish bin? Or am i sh** out of luck and should just move it to Vodafone and deal with signal issues for a bit?

I topped up yesterday too, over $50 worth in total for their big combo thing. Hopefully I get this sorted so I can use that number full time. Just sitting there wasting away now D;

I'd be interested to see what the outcome is of this myself. I personally am currently afflicted by issues with receiving SMS since a number port. I can send fine, and iMessage works fine for me. Similarly to you I have issue mainly with verification texts not coming through. I have also ported to Skinny (although from 2degrees).

Interestingly, our work phones have been ported from Spark to Vodafone and... the same issue has arised. I'm also aware of others at work with this problem and even a couple of friends who have experienced similar issues.

Can you please try the following:

- Disable iMessage

- Restart your phone

- Re-activate iMessage

This will update your number in Apples iMessage server and should resolve the issue.

Please let me know how you get on.

Cheers

Paul.

Hi Paul.

No such luck I'm afraid. The above steps have been my life for the last 2 days hahaha.

Tried again now, still no luck. iMessage is turned off so I can reply to texts.

last nights steps with apple support involved me resetting the phone to factory settings and trying again, and then the same but restoring to a backup. No luck with either.

Cheers

Do you still have your old SIM (with old number) on it? Can you put that in, deactivate iMessage and iCloud/FindMyIPhone with that in it then swap to the new SIM?

@trig42 yah tried that too before I swapped sims. Was terrified I'd screw it up so read all sorts of guides to check I did it right. The old sim is now in another phone, I had to change it to microsim. If I was to try again I'd need to sim swap once more, but we'll see what happens as that could be an option.

I too am having this issue with my VF note 5 since moving from 2D.

I can no longer receive international texts from at least Google and DigitalOcean.

The VF rep gave this explanation:

"More than likely the issue is that the SMS aggregators for those 2FA services have not updated their MNP tables. Unfortunately there is not much further value we [VF] can add, if an SMS for you does not arrive to our network, we can't deliver anything as we don't have anything to deliver. I've traced over your past 100 SMS's [ and they have all been successfully delivered].

I would suggest to double check the settings on those 2FA services, to check they have the correct carrier listed, and if not, log a job with that services helpdesk, to see if that routing can get updated by their SMS aggregator"

Hope this helps you find a solution [and then let us know!]...

I have yet to log a job with the services provider...

Yep so that would be going straight in to the too hard basket.

Update time!

So tldr; ported back to Vodafone and everything works again.

Long story:

- Paul at Skinny ( @livingskinny ) passed my feedback on and had some others in the Skinny team look into the issue. Lots of trouble shooting tips sent back, and they were obviously keen to get it sorted out for me which I do appreciate. However I needed iMessage working and didn't want stick round for days/weeks to try and sort it.

- John ( @johnr ) said it was to do with the SMS aggregator or something along those lines that Apple and the other 3rd party services were using to send verification texts. Switching back to Voda should fix it so I was keen to give that a go.

- Skinny CSR team put my combo and credit on another sim so it doesn't get lost when I port, supervisor or someone was meant to look into it and see if a refund could be approved but not holding my breath. Will probably use it for data.

- John organised the port after I wasn't able to do it via the Vodafone site, and by 4pm the number port was done.

- Finish work, topup my phone and turn iMessage on... BOOM! Done. Activated near on instantly and working perfectly :D

I've just finished moving all my other stuff over, and all the services mentioned in the OP activated fine also, no trouble. It is frustrating but understandable why porting could mess this up.

I feel like if I ported back to Skinny it may stay all working again since my number is activated now, but I'm not taking the chances for quite some time!

Thanks again everyone for the help! Hopefully one day posts like this won't even exist.
